オーケストラに一歩も引けを取らないロストロポーヴィッチの太くまろやかで、しかも強いチェロの圧倒的な音色と音量は快感でさえあり、カラヤンの指揮は曲のツボを心得た巧みさとチェロと対決するかのような激しさを見せている。いわば両巨匠は火花の散るような熱い協演を展開しているのだが、そのことが逆に芝居がかっている、という辛口の批評をこうむる一因にもなっている。しかし、演奏の語り口のうまさという意味ではこれを凌ぐものはざらにない。ベルリンフィルはここでもすばらしい技巧を披露している。この演奏は巨匠たちの時代を物語るひとつのモニュメントでもある。

大好きな音楽家がまた去ってしまいました‥。2007年4月27日、20世紀を代表する偉大なチェリストであるロストロポーヴィチが亡くなりました。享年80歳。‥音楽家としては勿論ですが、私は彼の人柄が大好きでした! ソルジェニーツインを匿ったとして祖国を追われてしまい、彼としては辛い日々を過ごした事もあったでしょうが、そんなことは感じさせない温かくて優しい彼の奏でるチェロは、私にとってかけがえのない日々の慰めでした‥。訃報を知る少し前に彼の指揮する「チャイコフスキーの悲愴交響曲」を聴いていたばかりで、まさか突然に彼が亡くなってしまうなんて…。彼の指揮するチャイコフスキーは私のお気に入りだが、やはりチェリストとしての彼は「カザルス、フルニエ、シュタルケル、そしてフォイアマン」と共に忘れられない素晴らしい存在だと思います。‥この巨匠カラヤンと競演した「ドボ・コン」はヴィルティオーソ・チェリストとしての彼が聴ける貴重な録音でしょう‥! 今までどれだけ彼の演奏に慰められ、助けられたことでしょう‥。ご冥福をお祈りいたします‥。(合掌)

　ロストロポーヴィッチはこの曲を何回録音しているのだろうか。私が知っているだけでジュリー二、小澤征爾のものがあるが、カラヤンと録音したこのＣＤが今でも最高の名演であると思う。

　役者が揃っている。堂々として、聞かせどころを心得ていて、安心して聴いていられる。スラブ音楽のお国なまりなどは期待する方が間違っているというものだが、メランコリックなメロディの憂愁とした情感はたっぷり聴かせてくれるし、この曲が第１級の名曲であることを証明してくれる名演である。

　音質も最新の物と比較すれば奥行きに乏しいかもしれないが、聴き始めてしまえばまったく気にならない。むしろ後年小澤とエラートに入れたものより良いくらいだ。
　この曲が好きな人はもちろん、「え、チェロの協!奏曲なんてあるの」なんて言ってまだ聴いたことのない人にも絶対のお薦め盤である。
