Ｒ．シュトラウスと言うと、華麗な交響詩・オペラを今までメインとして聴いてきましたが、「４つの最後の歌」を知って今となっては僕の好きな曲のベスト１０に入っています。
静寂感・黄昏感といった、Ｒ．シュトラウスの交響詩とまるで違う世界がこの曲にはあります。特に３・４曲目がいいですね。
Ｒ．シュトラウスが得意なカラヤンがＢＰＯと共にシルクのような煌びやかな伴奏をし、ヤノヴィッツの例えようのない美声・パワーがなんと言ってもすごい！彼女の声を知ってしまうとなかなか他のソプラノが聞けなくなりますよ。
カラヤン嫌いの人は一度このＣＤを聞いてみてください。きっと「さすがカラヤン」と思いますよ。

　この盤の「4つの最後の歌」はいつ聴いても、何度聴いても、ああ、素晴らしいな、この世にこんなに美しい音楽と演奏があるんだ、と思ってしまう音楽です。一生好きである自信があります。 そして私が聴いたことのある「4つの最後の歌」の中では、この盤は別格、と言っていいのではないかと思います。 85歳で世を去ったリヒャルト・シュトラウスの最晩年に完成されたものらしく、若き日に死と隣り合わせにいたというこの大作曲家が、人生の終焉にたどり着いた境地、それがこの音楽になっているのでしょう。

　ヤノヴィッツの澄んだ伸びやかな歌声は、天上から降り下りてくるようです。シュワルツコップ盤と比較すれば明らかなのですが、ヤノヴィッツの声は、１つの楽器のようにオーケストラの中に溶け込んでいます。

　リヒャルト・シュトラウスが選んだ、ヘッセの詩三編と、アイヒェンドルフという人の詩が、これまた素晴らしく、　特に、「四つの最後の歌」の「最後」によく演奏される、「夕映えの中で」は、四曲の中でも、楽曲、詩の素晴らしさなど、全てにおいて際立っていると思います。

　死は孤独なものだと思うのですが、このアイヒェンドルフの詩は違う。この詩の中で描かれる死は、人生を共に歩いてきた伴侶との二人のものだと思います。曲の途中（この盤の2分10秒）から出てくる、二本のフルートは、詩にも出てくる二羽の雲雀を表していて、これが旅をやめ、夕映えの中下界を見渡している、二人の象徴でもあります。曲の最後、夕日が沈む時、二羽の雲雀のさえずりはいよいよ高らかに、明るく、天に昇って行きます。これは二人の魂です。

　この澄みきった明るく美しい音楽とアイヒェンドルフの詩の世界が、自らの死を意識したリヒャルト・シュトラウスが到達した境地であり、人生の最期に寄せる理想であり、また人生をともに旅する夫婦というものの最期の理想でもあるのだと私は思います。

　20代の若き日に作曲され、同じく「死」をテーマにした「死と浄化」が共に収められているのも、作曲家リヒャルト・シュトラウスを理解する一助になるという意味で、この盤の面白さと言ってもいいかもしれません。

　私は音楽を愛する全ての人達に、この盤を薦めることができます。

カラヤンの悪口は賞賛と同時に多く聞かれる、私も実はその一派であった。
でもやはり実力は認めないと、自分が惨めになるこんな反省を促したのがこのCDであった。これ以上の演奏は考えられないからだ、私はもちろん、ケンペのほうが好きであるし、ベームの方がカラヤンよりよく聞く

最近カラヤンの悪口をいわなくなった、理由はイタリアオペラの作品群とリヒャルト聞くようになったからだ。もしかしたらカラヤンの悪口はレコードの時代のものなのかもしてない。今は気に入れば、ラーメン2杯分の価格で　CDが買えるし、MDにも録音できる、上手な演奏も一つぐらいという軽い感覚の現代で　無理してカラヤンさんをけなすのはいかがなものか？
