この作品をやって、まず思ったのは3やPS2シリーズとは明らかに性格が違うと言う事です。3以降の作品には凝ったストーリーが組み込まれ、やる度にどっぷり浸かるのに対してこのエースコンバット2は「痛快なフライトアクション」を楽しむ作品だと思います。簡単に言えば「眼の前の敵を倒せ!」てな感じです。ストーリーを重視される方からすればつまらないと感じる方もいるでしょう。ただ、この2には後にPS2の時代に変わり、壮大なストーリーで知られるようになったエースコンバットの原点があります。その一つにゲーム中多数出現するネームド機の機体カラーをよく見ると、最近の作品に酷似した物も見受けられます。他にもいろいろ、ヒントを得たであろう物が結構あります。ですから、一度プレイされる事をお勧めします、エースコンバットの原点が見られますよ。

操作が難しい、と敬遠されがちなジャンルだが、その中でも今作は比較的操作系統はマスターしやすい方かと。操作にさえ慣れたら後はバルカンで敵機を墜とすなり、橋の下をくぐるなりどうとでも楽しめる。

過剰な演出など一切なく、自分の腕で敵機を撃墜する、つまりプレイヤーがゲームの演出をするのが味。古さもあるが、飾り気のない硬派なソフトといえる。ナムコならではのセンス良いオープニングムービーも注目。大空を自在に翔ぶ快感を是非味わって欲しい。

いまでは考えられないことですが，エースコンバット２が発売された当時はリアル感のあるフライトゲームは高価なPC環境を整備しないと遊べないものでした．また，リアル感に加えて，操作の爽快感を重視したゲームバランスも画期的なことでした．
PCゲームだと，中距離AAMは視程外からロックオン→発射，携行弾数も数発，というリアリティを追求した初心者には操作を覚えるだけで飽きてしまいそうなゲームシステムが当たり前だった中で，何も考えなくてもくるくる飛び回ってミサイルを撃ち放題のエースコンバット２は「楽しい！！」の一言でした．
友人宅で遊んだ楽しさが忘れられずに，まったく興味の無かったPSを購入しにいったことをいまでも懐かしく思い出します．
