舞台は二十世紀初頭。
西洋文明により発見され最高峰の名を塗りかえた山を抱えるカムコルス山脈の入山が初めて許された。"世界最高峰の史上初登頂"――この偉業を巡り、各国がその威信と野心を胸に登山隊を送りはじめた。

プレイヤは日本登山隊を率いて下界の文明を離れた極限の自然の中で"登山の黄金時代"を経験する。

ゲームは"編成"と"アタック"のターンに分かれ、編成ターンでは国内での準備を行い、アタックターンはベースキャンプ(山の麓に設置する登山隊の本拠地)からの挑戦になり、物資、隊員の能力の限界、季節と天候、地形を考慮しながら、リアルタイムで隊員に指示を出し登頂を目指す。

挑戦できるのは、Manutse/DhaulaChenli/KangaPurna/SishaKanli/K-0の巨峰。
ここにさらにそれぞれどの方角からどのルートを狙うかの選択がある。

登山とは無縁の人なら一見地味な題材に思えるがその印象とは実に対照的な情熱の物語。
ゲーム内には登山用語辞典がついているが、それを読んでいるだけでも興味深い。

システムは、他のゲームのように偶然に頼った無理を押し通すと戦況が厳しくなる。
「やり直しが利くからゲーム」というゲームの約束で可能なズルを否定することで、このゲームは"やり直しのきかない生死の戦い"に挑む登山家たちの尊厳とその戦いの威厳とをしっかり守り通した。
そして、それこそがリアルな熱気を味あわせてくれている。

アクションゲームで自己の能力を試すのや、パズルで自分を楽しませるのや、RPGのストーリーに身を委ねて得られる楽しみはない。
だが、やりはじめたが最後、この世界に圧倒され、魅了され、ある日本屋や図書館で登山家の手記をつい手に取っている自分を発見するに違いない。

一見して地味なゲームで、お子様には薦められません。
純然たる大人のゲームです。
発売して10年近く経つと思うのですが未だにやってしまう中毒性の高さ。
登頂の達成感、遭難時の焦燥感、遺体発見時の絶望感、、、
美麗なムービーなど無くてもビシビシ感じる雰囲気がこのゲームにはあります。

全てのハード、ジャンルを合わせて私の中の五指に入ります。
続編は間違いなく出ないと思いますが、他のメーカーが引き継いででも出してほしいと思わせるゲームです。

登山をやってた者として、こういうゲームをやりたいと思ってたので、
このゲームを店頭で見つけた時はすごく嬉しかった。

内容自体も期待を裏切らない出来で、雪山に挑む感じはかなりリアルな
印象を受ける。隊員に干渉できない感じや突如凍傷などになってしまう
ところがなんとも歯がゆいが、アタックを開始したら登頂できることを
祈りつつ待ち続けるのみというのが切に迫っている感じがして、このゲ
ームの魅力だと思う。

この作品を知る人はそう多くはいないかもしれないが、何度やっても飽
きることのない大切な作品の一つである。

p.s.攻略本も出ているので、それを駆使してルート研究してみるのもあ
　　りだと思う。でも見ないで自分なりに道を切り開くのもＧｏｏｄ!
