大航海時代をテーマにしたシュミレーションはいくつかあるが、私はネオアトラスが一番好きである。1歩間違えると「クソゲー」と言われそうなシンプルさが良い。毎回違う世界観は、何度プレイしてもハマってしまう。

基本は霧を晴らし世界を創る事だが、世界の歴史や不思議が散りばめられたシナリオで不思議な謎解き（解いてもやっぱり不思議）、ユーモラスなキャラクター、その少しもったりした所も愛すべき所である。

　簡単に言うと、主人公が雇っている船乗りたちに海洋の調査をさせ、「世界の真の姿、世界地図を作る」ことが目的のゲームです。
　調査には船団の維持費がかかるので、主人公は交易をして、船乗り達が戻ってくるのを待つ。待つ間、新たに判明した陸地・海洋の調査をし、財宝や特産物（交易で売買出来る品）を見つけたりして、所持金が０になること（＝ゲームオーバー）を防がなくてはいけないので、頭も使うゲームです（笑）。
　交易は、特産物を組み合わせて、新たな特産物（加工品）を作り出す事ができるので、加工品を極めるという目的だけでも十分遊べると思います。
　このゲームの醍醐味は、最終目的である「世界地図の作成」にあると思います。一度として、同じ地図が出来上がることはありません。慣れてくると、自分好みの世界地図を作ってしまう事が可能です（アトランティスを作る事も出来ます）。
　このゲームは、やりこみプレイが可能なので、一本のソフトを長く遊びたい方には、オススメです。その点で、ちょっと人を選びそうなので、評価は星１つ減らしました。

　あと、このゲームは音楽が、すごく素敵です。各地域・大陸のテーマ、各船長たちのテーマ、どれをとってもいいです。このゲームをプレイする際には、音楽もじっくり聞いてもらいたいです。ゲーム中のＢＧＭは変更できる（各地域・大陸のテーマ＋タクトペンギンの音楽隊の曲に限りますが）ので、好きな曲をかけっぱなしに出来るのも、このゲームの好ましい点だと思います。
