　ドルアーガの魅力といえば宝箱収集に話題が行きがちですが、このゲームの面白さはそれよりむしろ、当時大流行していたパソコン版「ハイドライド」のようなアクションRPGの要素を、アーケードゲームの落としどころとして再設定させた凝縮感、そしてそれを必要以上にプレイヤーに押し付けない潔さにあると思います。

　ドルアーガの塔が他のよく似たゲームと極めて特異な部分は、何といっても
○体力ゲージが表示されていない
○敵を全滅させられるほどギルの体力がない
…という所。
敵との交戦中は否応なしにお互いの体力が削られるため、どんなに上手に戦っても始めから倒す事が出来ない敵が存在しているということ。
このテのゲームにありがちな、「敵を全滅させながら進む」という攻略法が当然のように通じず、プレイヤーはマスクされたギルの体力の残りを予測しながら目の前の敵をどうやり過ごすか？選択を常に迫られるストイックさがこのゲームの最たる魅力と思えます。
　そしてその特徴を後押しするのは結構シビアな制限時間設定と、運がよければ１フロア３秒で終わらせる事が出来るクリア条件。
　そして、とかく敵を倒した数を評価されがちのこのテのゲームに対し、これは早解きでクリアした時のタイムボーナスの比率がかなり大きく、敵と対峙した時に「倒すか？逃げるか？」という選択肢、どちらにも「点数」という評価が得られる事になっている。
「倒す」だけが冒険ではない事を「たった一つのボタンとコントローラー」だけで表現していて、そのシンプルな操作性に凝縮された奥の深さはちょっと、他の追随を許していないような気がします。

　多少のアレンジを加えたバージョンが出ていますが、私にとっては結局、マスクされた体力ゲージと急かされる時間制限の中で、その時その時の敵をどのように凌ぐのか？をストイックに追求できるオリジナルのバージョンが今の所、唯一「ドルアーガの塔」と呼べるものだと思っています。

オリジナルそのまんま。というかオリジナルそのまんま移植はこれのみか?!(ナムコのPC版のシリーズ集には収録されているけど)コンティニュー、セーブできないんだけど、それができない緊張感も当時そのままの移植ですね。ファミコン版をイメージしているのは間違いです。アーケード版はおもしろいんです。

操作は簡単、上下左右の移動とソード攻撃のみでゲーム用コントローラが無くてもいけます。各階の鍵を手に入れ全60階クリアする単純な内容ですが各階に隠されたアイテムを入手しないと到底先に進めないようになっています。アイテム入手法はヘルプ欄でゲーム中に確認でき初めての人でもOKですが、全ステージクリアするまで約２時間半セーブはおろかコンティニューさえ出来ないのはなんとかしてほしいです。20年も前のオリジナルのままなので思い入れが無ければオススメはできません。
