私はギター弾きなので少し偏った観点でこのアルバムを聞いています。
FREEは好きなバンドです。　私にとってはこのアルバムの殺気とHighWayの優しく切ない空気の対比が非常に興味深く思えるのです。
このファーストは、はっきり言えばリスナー向きのアルバムでは無いでしょう。
しかし私にとってはFREEの中で最高のアルバムです。
ブルースギターを弾きながらも何か物足りない...なんて方は騙されたと思ってどうぞ☆！

本作のコンセプトは、タイトル通り「悲しみ」である。後年、メンバーの若さに似つかわしくない枯れた風情は（悪く言えば単調な）楽曲を発表しすぎたせいか、今ひとつ中途半端な印象がついて回るフリーだが、この1stは達観する前の熱いエナジーが満ち溢れていて（・∀・??ｲｲ!!

それにしても、各人の音楽的才能はどうだろう。アンディ・フレイザーのフレットを縦横無尽に駆け巡るベースラインは正に天才的だし、サイモン・カークのソリッドかつクールなドラミングも最高。しかし、何と言ってもグループの核は歌とギター。ポール・ロジャースは紛れもなくロック界の麒麟児だった。栴檀は二葉　り芳し、個人的にロッド・スチュワートと双璧の天才ヴォーカリストと信じている、その才気を満喫できるCDだ。

加えて、今は亡きポール・コゾフのむせび泣くギターよ！テクニックを情念が完璧に追い越してしまっている。サンタナのような流麗さとは正反対の泣き方。ギターの音が涙になっているんだもの。これが20歳そこそこの人間の魂の発露とは、全く以て信じ難いほどだ。当時のイングランドにも、ロバート・ジョンスンさながらの悪魔に魂を売り払った男がいたのだと思わざるを得なくなる。

フリーの最高傑作は、多くで語られているようにバランス的にも3rd。しかし、最も愛聴しているのはこの1st。地味なジャケットと共にロック史の片隅に追いやられてしまっているのは寂しい限りだが、耳の肥えた音楽好きには賛辞をもって迎えられる作品に相違ない。フリーの本質は曲に非ず。”音”そのものが彼らの存在理由である。

６９年発表の１ｓｔ。いきなりアコギで意表を付く１．は何やらプログレ/サイケっぽい曲調で、フリーらしからぬ雰囲気が漂う。そういえばジャケットもプログレっぽいデザインにも見える。２．もギターのフィード・バックにビックリのモロにブルースっぽい曲。５．と７．はブルースの古典のカヴァーであり、他の曲も露骨にブルースっぽい曲調が目立つ。意外・・・と言うほどでもないだろうが、このアルバムではメンバーの共作曲が、４．(ロジャース/フレイザー) ８．(ロジャース/ゴゾフ) の２曲しかない。ほとんどはポール・ロジャースの単独作品となっており、それだけにポール・ロジャースのカラーが全面に出ていると思ってもよさそうであるが、演奏そのものは既にかなりのクオリティーを持っており、この頃の新人グループとしては抜きん出ていたことは間違いない。この頃はアート・ロックの時代であり、ハード・ロックやサイケ/プログレ系など多くのグループがブルースを吸収/解体して新しい音楽をつくり出そうとしてしていた時期だが、フリーもその多くのグループと出発点は一緒だったことが良く分かるアルバムである。まだオリジナリティと言う意味ではポイントは低いが、既に貫禄すら感じさせるアルバムである。
