Love & Life is a fairly comprehensive overview of Diana Ross's 40-year career. Its 41 tracks are divided between two CDs, individually entitled--somewhat cheesily--"Life" and "Love". This schmaltzy theme is reflected by Miss Ross' gushing Gwyneth Paltrow-esque sleeve notes, which begin "This collection finds me at such a wonderful time in my journey". Nurse, pass me a bucket. To be fair, though Diana's not released a decent record since 1985's Bee Gee-penned Supremes pastiche "Chain Reaction", there is much of merit here. CD1, "Life", contains all the early Holland-Dozier-Holland honed Supremes hits ("Baby Love", "Where Did Our Love Go", "Stop! in the Name of Love" et al), although the inclusion of "The Happening" rather than the vastly superior "Love Child" or "My World is Empty Without You", is disappointing. Likewise, the glaring omission of solo standouts such as "All of My Life" (surely a better title than Love & Life?) and "Surrender", in favour of cloying 90s ballads. CD2, "Love", charts this gradual descent into saccharine diva-dom. Throughout the 1970s, Diana Ross recorded a succession of truly timeless love songs, as the likes of "Touch Me in the Morning", "I'm Still Waiting" and "Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To?)", ably attest. Sad, then, that Miss Ross' 1981 duet with Lionel Richie on "Endless Love" marked the beginning of a steady decline into mawkish balladry. --Chris King
