英国出身のプログレ・バンドの巨人の､’６９年発表の２nd。
ギタリストのMICK ABRAHAMSが脱退し、現在も共に活動を続けるMARTHIN BARREが加入しての初の作品となる。
　同時にそれは､本作以降から現在に至るまでのバンドのキャラクターが形骸化される一歩となるべく内容となっている。
　フルートをフィーチャーしたハードなブルーズ･ロックという､それだけでも十分に個性的なデビュー作を踏襲しつつ､なおかつバラエティに富ませている。
　それは、ロック、ブルーズに加えフォーク、ジャズ､クラシックの要素を取り入れたということもあるが､それが成功した何よりの要因は、ポップで親しみやすい楽曲にある。現在でもライヴの定番となっている曲が複数収録されているのが､その証明だ。
　それが､荒削りで破天荒な演奏とあいまって、その楽しさを倍増させている。
　そして､このペーパー･スリーヴ。デビュー２作目で､ここまでユーモラスなアイデアと、凝りに凝った作りを具現化した実行力が凄い。
　音楽に対する強い欲求が､自由な発想で表れ、後の本領の片鱗をチラつかせている､若さ溢れる意欲作だ。

`69年発表。時はニューロック時代。ロック、ブルース、ジャズ、クラシック色々な素養を身につけたミュージシャンが独自の個性の中に実験・租借を繰り返していた時代です。ジャンルや演奏のマニュアルが見えてしまった今とは 隔世の感があります。しかし、そんな時代でもそれらのジャンルを消化しきったグループは多くはありません。タルを一言でいえばジャズ的なリズムチェンジを繰り返す、へヴィーブルースロックをベースにクラシカルなフルートがリードをとったバンド、（というすいません、全然一言ではありませんが）です。イアンのヴォーカルも無茶苦茶カッコいいです。残念ながら、徐々にブルース色がなくなり、私の興味からは離れてしまいますが、逆にプログレ分野では初期とは別の根強いファンを獲得しています。
もしブリティッシュロックといくくりであれば、初期２枚が圧倒的です。ストーンズのレットイット〜やベガーズ〜とも比較しうる傑作だと思います。いやそれら以上かも。
