本作が発売当時の売れ行きが悪かった理由は色んな見方があるけど、筆者はやはりあのｼﾝｸﾞﾙｶｯﾄ第1弾となったﾎﾞﾃﾞｨｼﾞﾗﾝｹﾞｰｼﾞではないかと思う。それまでもｱﾙﾊﾞﾑごとに色んなオドロキを用意してくれていたのだけど、最初に新譜からのｼﾝｸﾞﾙとしてあの曲を聴きあのプロモを観て悲しみの沼へ沈んでしまったﾌｧﾝは数知れないはず。それがひいてはｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ全体への先入観となってしまったのだ。その後ﾜｰｸｽが出るまでの空白期間に耐えられずｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ全体を聴いてみて愕然。なんだ思いっきりｸｲｰﾝじゃないか。確かにｱﾚﾝｼﾞや曲調にR＆Bのﾌﾚｰﾊﾞｰはあるけどでもｸｲｰﾝ本来のDNAはしっかり息づいてるじゃないか。どうしてこんなことになったワケ？・・ってやっぱあのｼﾝｸﾞﾙというか売り方の失敗だよ。ﾎﾞﾃﾞｨﾗﾝｹﾞｰｼﾞは最初に聴かせちゃあかんよ・・。ちなみにﾗｲﾌﾞで聴くｽﾃｲﾝｸﾞﾊﾟﾜｰのカッコ良さたるや・・・ﾌﾚﾃﾞｨ、君は正しかった。

僕たちはこのアルバムに対する評価を改めるべきだ。
このアルバムが出た当時、「クイーンらしくない音」として
認められなかったけれど、それはもう昔の話だ。
現に1などのサウンドは今聴いても古くさくないし、
大衆に受け入れられると思う。　
「クイーンII」も「世界に捧ぐ」も「ホットスペース」も含め
それらは　クイーンという一つのジャンルじゃなかろうか・・・。

実は印象的な楽曲と捨て曲の落差が激しい（特に「NEWS OF THE WORLD」以降）このバンドのアルバムの中では、最も楽曲のクオリティが安定している作品の一つ。
ギターの活躍度が低い、ファンク色が濃く優雅さに欠ける等々、リリース当時は散々な評判でしたが個々の楽曲の完成度は非常に高いアルバムです。
この後クイーンはそれまでの活動の集大成的な作品を出していきますが、「時代と競った」のは本作が最後でしょう。この路線の発展型を聴けなかったのは非常に残念です。

他の方も書かれていますが本作収録曲のライブバージョンはとてもハードでかっこいいです。
