完璧なドキュメンタリー・スタイルを取りながらも、実はヤラセを織り交ぜて作られる、いわゆるモンド映画なるジャンルを確立した隠れた名作。
この「モンド映画」という名称は、本作品の原題「MONDO CANE（犬の世界）」がその由来となっている。

世界各地で撮影されたユニークな映像の数々は、現代の我々には過激な「残酷性」は感じられないかもしれないが、この作品が公開された１９６０年代においては、紛れもなくショッキングな映像であったことは想像に難くない。

各エピソードの順序には、一見、脈絡がないと思われがちだが、牛を殺す儀式の後には、牛を主人公とした祭りのエピソードを入れるなど、編集に工夫が施されており評価できる。
そして、我々日本人にとっては、「東京温泉」のエピソードに関心が集まるであろう。

東京に住む殿方たちは、仕事や酒の飲み過ぎによって疲れた体を「東京温泉」で癒すという。さて、その「東京温泉」で殿方たちが受けるサービスとは・・・！
これは、見てのお!楽しみとしておこう。
アカデミー賞にノミネートされた美しい主題歌をバックに、モンド映画ならでは奇抜な映像群を是非とも堪能あれ！
