日本人の全滅(！)を企む「死ね死ね団」(何度聞いても凄い名前だ)は、
発狂して死に至る毒薬を使った「キャッツアイ作戦」、
精巧な偽札を新興宗教団体を通じて大量にばら撒きインフレを起こす「Ｍ作戦」に続き、
第三の作戦として、地底戦車モグラートによって外国のタンカーを沈めたり、日本に来た諸外国の要人を暗殺して、
日本を国際的に孤立させる「日本破壊工作作戦」を決行！
変身ヒーローは一話完結の作品が多いのですが、本作は１クール(１３話)完結の連続ドラマ。
登場人物の異常なテンション、敵側のリアルな作戦、カルト作品として特撮ヒーローの歴史に燦然と輝いています。

今も昔も石油やそれを運んでくるシーレーンは日本の生命線。国内コンビナートと日本に入ってくる産油国から来るタンカーを破壊し、日本を国際社会から孤立化させ日本及び日本人の抹殺を企むミスターK率いる「死ね死ね団」の作戦である。当時の日本の食糧不足、紙不足、石油ショックなど世相を反映していて子供向けの特撮番組としては異例に現実的な脅威の存在が描かれている。第二次大戦にも存在した通商破壊作戦さながらである。対するレインボーマンはヨガの修行で得た超能力のみを頼りに人間として躓き苦悩しながらも成長していく孤独な姿として表現されている。悪がある限りレインボーマンであるヤマトタケシには家族愛、恋人との愛を育む事など許されないのだ。
