１９６９年発売。「日曜日の印象」に続くセカンドアルバム。前作のジャズ＆ブルースに比べるとかなりロック色が濃くなった。このバンド独特の癖のあるサウンドはイアン・アンダーソンの世界でもある。スタジオ録音じゃなんか窮屈そうで今にも音が弾け出しそうだ。[back to the family][nothing is easy][we used to know][for a thousand mothers]はライブで是非聴いてみたい曲だ。オリジナルジャケットは開くと全員が起きあがるという凝ったものだ。またボーナス・トラックが４曲ありお買い得だ。やはり１９６０年代後半から７０年代前半にはロックの名盤が生まれている。このアルバムもその中のひとつである。

ジェスロ･タルのセカンド･アルバム（69年発売）のリマスター盤。ボーナス･トラック４曲収録。ジャズ、ブルース、クラシック、トラッドなどの要素を折衷したような独特のタル･サウンドが確立したアルバムであり、アルバムの構成も見事で、イアン･アンダーソンの才能がまさに開花した初期タルの傑作といえる内容だ。このアルバムのキーとなる曲は、バッハの曲をアレンジしたクラシカルな「Bouree」と、エスニック的要素を取り入れたトラッド･フォーク「Fat Man」の２曲だろうか。両曲ともイアン･アンダーソンの音楽的な懐の深さがよく現れた名曲で、単なるロック音楽以上の幅の広さを見せつけ、その後の音楽シーンへの可能性をも示したアルバムとして、その評価を押し上げていると思う。なお、「We Used To Know」は「レココレ」誌上でさえきけんぞう氏が、イーグルスの「Hotel California」との類似性を語っていた曲（コード進行が同じだし、ギター･ソロも似ているような ... ）。ボーナス･トラックは４曲ともシングルＡＢ面曲。「17」は88年に出た20周年記念ボックス（現在は廃盤）でＣＤ化されただけだったので嬉しい収録だが、これがまたタルっぽくない曲。

69年の2nd。この頃はまだ一応ブルーズロックに入るのだろうが、ハードロック寄りで、フルートが大々的に入ってきて暴れ回り、フォークやクラシックなどの要素まで取り入れている…ブルーズロックの枠では捉えられない個性的なスタイル。まだ若さを感じさせるのだが、それでいて変に落ち着いていてシブいのだ。やはりイアン・アンダーソンはただ者ではない。
「A NEW DAY YESTERDAY」はギターがハードにうねり、間奏では熱狂的なフルートが飛び回る。「JEFFERY GOES TO LEICESTER SQUARE」はフォーク調、フルートの優しい響きが心地良い。「BOUREE」はバッハの曲をもとに作ったインスト。フルートが優美に踊り、徐々に熱を帯びて軽快に走り出す演奏、ベースソロも味がある。名曲！「BACK TO THE FAMILY」は軽やかに始まるが、サビでは激しく盛り上がる。特にギターとフルートが狂おしく絡み合う最後の部分がカッコイイ！「LOOK INTO THE SUN」はピアノが効果的。「NOTHING IS EASY」ではハードなギターと唾が飛んできそうな激しいフルートがスリリングにせめぎ合う。とにかく熱い。「FAT MAN」はどこかの民族音楽みたいな妖しく陽気な響き。「WE USED TO KNOW」は哀愁のあるメロディーが素晴らしく、サビの哀感をたたえたままフルートソロとギターソロが高く高く昇りつめる。熱い涙・虚しさが込み上げてきます。「REASON FOR WAITING」はオルガン、ストリングスで壮大に盛り上がる。美しいフルートにうっとりします。「FOR A THOUSAND MOTHERS」では勇ましいハードロックがフルートとともに勢いよく突っ込んでくる。
