「轟音」というものの気持ち良さを私の中に文字通り「叩き込んだ」､RIDEのデビューアルバム。リリースされた1990年、私はまだ小学生だったのでさすがにリアルタイムで経験することはできなかったんですが、のちのち何年か経ったあとに聴いても全く色あせない輝きを放っている傑作アルバム。

地を這うようにメロディアスなラインを弾き出すベースに導かれる"Seagul"では、キラキラとまばゆい光を放ちながら疾走するギターと手数の多いドラムが、浮遊感のある繊細なフレーズを呟くボーカルに彩りを加え、そしてそれらを全て飲み込むかのように暴れまわるフィードバックノイズが吹き荒れる。とんでもない轟音ながらメロディアスで、眩暈のするような光と繊細さを感じさせる音。自分たちが演っていて気持ち良い音を作ったという彼らだが、聴いてるこっちも最高に気持ち良い。蒼き初期衝動を放つ、圧倒的な活力に満ち溢れた問答無用の名盤。

それにしてもこのアルバムでの活き活きしたアンディのギターワークを聴いてると、現在Oasisで淡々とベースをプレイしている彼の姿に「なぜ！？」と思ってしまいます。

８０年代の後半から、イギリスではMY BLOODY VALENTINEやLUSHなんかのバンドが『シューゲイズ・ムーブメント』を作っていましたが、このRIDEもそのムーブメントの中から生まれたバンドでした。
本作は彼等の記念すべきファーストアルバム。

シューゲイザー独特の甘美な轟音ギターファズの音色を中心に彼等独特の世界観を展開していっていますが、上述のバンド達と異なっていたのが、彼等が伝統的なＵＫロックバンドのフォーマットを有しており、その上にギターファズが乗るというアプローチをとっていたこと。

ロックのダイナミズムと甘美なメロディが共存するエキサイティングかつ儚い音世界は、今なお私の耳を捉えて離しません。
個人的には捨て曲なしの名盤です。

1990年発表のデビューアルバム。UKチャート11位。ライド最高傑作の呼び声高いこの作品は、彼らのUK音楽シーンにおける多大な功績を感じ取ることができると思います。うねる轟音のギターノイズがとても心地よく、そのギターと共にのせられた豪快なドラムと甘く切ない声が一体化し、アルバム全体がこの上ない完成度のものになっています。代表曲"Seagull"や"Dreams Burn Down"、"Taste"収録。輝いていて澄み切った、しかしながら棘のある、シューゲイザーらしさが随所に散りばめられている幻想的で可憐なこのアルバムは、1990年を代表する1枚というのではなく、シューゲイザーを代表する美しい1枚だと言えるでしょう。
