変わり果てた音のピアノと途絶えそうな声での弾き語りに始まるヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの(1)。精気のない薄い弦楽サウンドをバックに囁きつづけるエミネムの(2)。そして表題となった(3)はストラングラーズの曲で……と、スタジオ録音&ライヴの2枚組だった『トゥ・ヴィーナス・アンド・バック』以来2年ぶりの新作はカヴァー集。デペッシュ・モード、10cc、ニール・ヤング、ブームタウン・ラッツ、はたまたスレイヤー……唖然とする曲たちだが、こわいほどにすべては彼女の曲だ。シンプルの極みはトム・ウェイツ作を弾き語りする(7)、ビートルズの(10)では在りようがどんどん変化して10分近くにも及ぶ。半数以上が4ピース・バンド基本でありながら、部分的にマスキングされていたりノーマルに響くことは少ないバンド演奏。そして静かで密やかな歌唱。剥いで削いで限りなく骨格だけにし、その髄に入り込んで骨質からも変えて奏で歌ってるかのよう。完全なる彼女の世界。 (松永記代美) --- 2001年11月号

トリ・エイモスがカバー集を出すこと自体にビックリしたが、期待したtrack10には驚いた。ビートルズの原曲もかなり性的であるが、その線で表現されていると思いきや、レノンが射殺されたときのニュースだのジョージ・ブッシュの声明だのが導入されてむしろ政治的なのである。前に枯葉剤批判の歌も書いていた人ではあるが。一筋縄じゃいかない人だ。

アルバム全体ではエイドリアン・ブリューがギターで参加。重いベース、ピアノの響き、ケイト・ブッシュやプログレ好きな人にはお薦めしたい。

Toriの唯一のカバーアルバム。
全曲、男性アーティストの曲を選んでるところが彼女らしい！
それらの曲を、女性の視点から歌い上げることが出来るのも、彼女の才能の凄さ。
ただカバーするだけじゃなく、完全に彼女の色に塗り替えてしまっています。


原曲は、それぞれ、

1. The Velvet Underground
2. Eminem
3. The Stranglers
4. Depeche Mode
5. 10cc
6. Lloyd Cole
7. Tom Waits
8. Neil Young
9. Boomtown Rats
10. The Beatles
11. Slayers
12. Joe Jackson

のもの。



１曲目の「New Age」が一番好きかもしれない。
歌詞は、The Velvet Undergroundのものじゃなくて、Lou Reedが１９６９年にライブで歌ったときの歌詞。
私も、Lou Reedの歌詞の方が断然好き。

ビートルズのカバーでは、バックにブッシュ大統領親子の銃に関する演説が。
政治的な歌に仕上がり、カバーというよりも、完全に彼女の才能で曲そのものを飲み込んでしまったかのよう。


こんなカバーアルバムを出せる女性アーティストは彼女くらい。
満ち溢れる才能が思う存分にいかされている、アルバムです。

わが国の彼女の評価からは考えもつかないほど、ポーランドをはじめ東欧諸国で人気がある彼女。何かかの地の女性ファンをとりこにするものを発散しているらしい。仕事がら訪れるたびにラジオでのエアプレイも増え、密かな信者を得ている気がします。なんでも歌詞がポイントとか。自立した働く女性のいいとこをくすぐるんでしょう。今作ではスリーブでの七変化よろしく、様々な曲想で楽しませてくれる。ずっとファンの人には実験作ともとれようそのバラエテイー加減にこそ評価がかかってそう。作品としては今を感じさせて悪くないとおもう。
