初めて聴いたときはレンタルだった。
正直、そんなに衝撃的ではなかった。
十四歳など、はっとするような曲もあるのだが…
アルバム全体ではつかみどころがない。

CDを返却してしばらくすると、無性に聞きたくなった。
また借りた。
すぐ返した。

でも気づけばまた借りている。

今では一番よく聴くアルバムだ。
よさが分かるまで何度も聴けとは言わない。
知らず知らずのうちに、はまっていく。
そんなアルバムだからです。

ハイロウズ初心者さんには絶対おすすめしない。
けれど私はハイロウズのアルバムの中でこれが一番好きかもしれない。
いや、持っているすべてのＣＤのうちでも、これが一番かもしれない。

始めのうちは、わかりづらくノリづらく、
奇妙なこの作品をどう扱っていいか正直戸惑った。
しばらくはまともに聴いていなかったと言っていい。

けれどある日突然、
「２１世紀音頭」がもの凄くハッピーなロックに聞こえてくる。
「クリーミー」がディープなラブソングに思えてならなくなる。

昔読んだ本を読み直して、
昔と全く違う感じ方をする自分に驚いた時、の感じに似ている。
なんとなく捨てがたくて本棚に戻してしまう本のように、
なんとなくＣＤラックに並べておいてほしい一枚。
いつものロックが体になじまない時に、ふと思い出してほしい一枚。

偉大なバンドに在籍した人というのは、どれだけ時間がたっても比較されるものだ。それが中枢に位置していたヒロトとマーシーならなおさらの事だ。
しかし、そんなことももう必要ない。

ブルーハーツとハイロウズの根本的な違いは、「涙の流し方」だ。
ブルーハーツは悔しくて、歯がゆくて涙を流す。ハイロウズは嬉しくて、楽しくて涙を流す。

そう。このアルバムは涙を滝のように流しながら大笑いする。
「泣き笑い」本当に素晴らしいと思う。さぁ、笑おうぜ。

「14才」は本当にすばらしい曲です。購入して約一年経って、再び聴きなおしたけれど、何度聴いてもやっぱり歌詞がいいから感動できる~~~。青春時代にひとっとびです。
