S&G5枚目のアルバムで、歴史に残る名盤です。アーティが映画「キャッチ22」の撮影で多忙の中レーコーディングされましたが、二人の関係は修復されるまでには至りませんでした。関係を取り戻そうとするポールの気持ちが、アルバム曲の随所に現れています。ニューヨークでアーティを気遣うポールの心情を歌った「ニューヨークの少年」や「手紙が欲しい」「ソング・フォー・ザ・アースキング」など、当時の彼らの状況と気持ちが伝わってきます。その打ちひしがれたポールの気持ちを率直に詩にしたのが、「ボクサー」です。パリのクラブで聴いたフォルク・ローレをポールがアレンジして、世界的に有名になった「コンドルは飛んでいく」。エバリー・ブラザースの「バイバイ・ラブ」も、今やS&Gのスタンダードと言っても過言ではないようです。「明日に架ける橋」は、世界の人々に勇気を与え、1971年のグラミー賞では、ビートルズの「レット・イット・ビー」やカーペンターズの「遥かなる影」などを破り、最優秀レコード賞などを受賞しました。「明日に架ける橋」は、僕が彼らのファンになるきっかけを作った曲でもあります。当時としてはS&G最後のアルバムとなったもので、必聴の価値ありです。

　Sound of Silenceを買ったのは、１９６７年、中学２年のときだった。深夜放送で聞いて~今話題のニッポン放送の「オールナイトニッポン」で~買った。当時は、Beatles一辺倒人間だったので、当時４００円のシングルを買うのは、小遣い的に厳しかった。
　笑われるかもしれないけど、ジャケットを見て、Beatlesと比べて、「ダサい」おじさんだと思った。

　でも、このシングル盤は文字通り、レコードが擦り切れるくらい聞いた。変な例えだけれど、「世の中Beatlesだけではない」と思いなおした次第。ロック系の音楽だけでないことも知った（多くの人が知ってると思うけど、最初の録音には、エレキギターは入っていなかった）。

　その意味で、僕は、Ｓ＆Ｇに対しては、感謝の気持ちを持っている。

　そのＳ＆Ｇがダスティン＝ホフマンの「卒業」のサウンドトラックを経て~これも買いました~ほとんど「解散」状態になってしまい、そういう中で、この２０世紀の名曲（少なくとも）ＢＥＳＴ１００には入る曲が出てきたときには狂喜乱舞しましたね。

　自分でも馬鹿だと思うのですが小学校５年までやって才能がないとあきらめたピアノの練習までしました（笑）。

　死ぬまでに、この曲のピアノと、Ｂｅａｔｌｅｓの「Ｉｎ　ｍｙ　ｌｉｆｅ」の間奏と、オールマンブラザーズのチャック=リーベルの「Ｊｅｓｉｃａ」をマスターしたいのですが、いかがなもんでしょうかね。

　おっと、個人的感慨にふけりました。

　このアルバムは「買い」です。
