バーニーはエレクトロニックのセカンドあたりから「典型的なロックを打ち込みでいかに表現するか」にトライし続けているように見える。最初のテーマはギターポップだったのが、エレクトロニックのサードでは純然たるロックに進化し、その完成形ともいえるのがこのアルバムではないかと思う。ヘッドフォンで聴けばよくわかるが、普通のロック的曲調（たとえば２とか）であっても、曲のあちこちにパズルのようにシンセが入っていて、それを意識して聴けば聴くほど奥深い。そういえばデビュー当時のニュー・オーダーって、バンドサウンドにシンセをただ乗っけるところからはじまったのだけど、このアルバムでは、もはやそれは職人の域？　ベースラインにジョイ・ディヴィジョンの再来を感じる5が特におすすめ!

完全な新作としては10年ぶりぐらいですが、これはもう、New Orderというよりも2001年式Joy Divisionです。
あのドラム、あのベース、あのテンテテ・メロディー、あのバーニーのヘタクソ一筋20年のヴォーカル。
もういつものアレがみんなDNAに染み込んでしまっていて、ああもうたまらないどうにでもして。という感じです。
(1) Crystalは、連続100回ぐらい聴いてしまいました。

とにかく、暗い。
Joy Division 最後の、イアン・カーティスが首吊り自殺する直前の (というか直後の) Closer も暗かった、もうこれは地球上のものとは思えないぐらい暗い、反物質のような暗さだったが、これも暗い。

疲れた体で温泉につかったときに思わず「あぁ...」と声が出るような、快適にしみこむ暗さ、あまりに暗いので逆に元気満点になってしまうという。

「辛いものを食べて暑さ発散!」みたいなものでしょうか?

「ニューオーダーってどんなのだろう? 聴いてみようかな?」とか、フロア向けの楽曲を期待される向きには、ちょっと違うかも? と思いますが、逆に「いつものアレ」を所望される向きには、これ以上のご馳走はありません。

とりあえずこの作品は、これまでのニュー・オーダーの集大成的な作品であるように感じられます。
独特の緊張感と耽美的なメロディのコントラストで、人々の涙腺を刺激するやり方は相も変わらずといった感じ。
個人的には1289が秀でていると思います。

スマパンのビリー・コーガン(→その後フジロックのホワイトステージで、嬉しそうにギターを弾いていたのが印象的でした)やプライマルズのメンバーが参加しているので彼等のファンにも十分受け入れられる内容を持っていると思います。
