   ニューヨークで育った少年セディは、父親の死をきっかけに、自分がイギリスの貴族・ドリンコート伯爵の後継者であることを知る。イギリスに渡ったセディだったが、両親の結婚をよく思っていなかった伯爵はセディと母親を引き離す…。「小公女セーラ」と同じ、バーネットによる児童文学の名作をアニメ化。1988年放送、14作目の「世界名作劇場」である。
   物語の大半は、偏屈な頑固者である伯爵をセディがどう変えていくか、という話となる。最初はセディを子ども扱いしていた伯爵だったが、そのまっすぐな明るさの中に「後継ぎの器」を見出し、自らもセディによって変わっていく様子が、エピソードの丹念な積み重ねでつづられる。「信じる心だけが人を変えることができる」というテーマに説得力が出るのも、この「世界名作劇場」ならではのゆったりとした時間の使い方ゆえだろう。19世紀末イギリスの豊かな自然の風景も美しい。
   終盤には、「自分の息子こそ正当な爵位継承者で、セディはニセモノ」と言い張る悪女ミンナが現れて、多少サスペンス風味が加わる。しかしそれも、ちょうどよいスパイス。基本的には、家族で楽しむのにちょうどよい、「名作」シリーズらしい作品に仕上がっている。（安川正吾）

セディの父親、ジェイムズが過労と心臓発作で亡くなった。葬儀では毅然と振舞うセディだが、家へ帰るとジェイムズを思い出してセディは泣き崩れてしまう。そんなセディを、母親のアニーは優しく励ます。しかし、ジェイムズの死によってアニーとセディの暮らしは大分苦しくなるのだった。・・・

亡くなった父親のために、そして自分とたった２人で暮らす母親のために、涙をこらえて「もう泣かないよ」というセディの姿は、本当に健気です。そう言ったものの、時にはやっぱりセディが父親を恋しく思い出す場面もあって、まだ７歳ながらも寂しさを他人に見せまいと一生懸命なセディに胸が痛くなりました。そんなセディを気遣うホッブスさんや仲間の存在も描かれています。経済的に苦しくなった生活を何とかかえようと、アニーは得意の裁縫で生計を立てるのですが、アニーがお金持ちの貴婦人から依頼されて作ったドレスの出来栄えが素晴らしいです。
