第２期クリムゾンの実質的ラスト作。フリップ・ウェットン・ブラフォードのトリオに各ゲストプレイヤーが加わった演奏で、この時期のクリムゾンの特徴であったタイトな音作りが心地よい。とくにtrack 2はドラマティックな展開とウェットンの円熟のヴォーカルが聴ける名作。同様にtrack 5もラストにふさわしい大作で、なんと同窓会的にマクドナルドとコリンズの二人の元メンバーのサックスまで入っている。この後、しばらくの間をおいてクリムゾンは再結成されるのであるが、それは全く別のバンド。したがって、われわれオールドファンにとって、「レッド」は郷愁をそそるクリムゾン最後の１枚なのだ。

３期ＫＣによる３部作のトリを飾るアルバムです。インプロヴィゼーション溢れるバトル合戦が行われたツアーの疲れからクロスは脱退し、正式メンバーはフィリップ、ウェットン、ブラッフォードの３名になっています。

初期ＫＣを思わせる叙情的でウェットンのボーカルが美しい2や、静から動への展開が見事な大作5といった名曲も良いのですが、やはりこのアルバムを特徴付けているのは、現在でもライブで演奏されることが多く、ヘヴィメタルクリムゾンの最高傑作といわれることの多い1の攻撃性ではないでしょうか。

フィリップによるとＫＣの名盤は「21世紀~」「ディシプリン」と当アルバムとのことであり、プログレファンには一度聴かれることをお奨めします。

１９７４年発表、中期クリムゾンのラストアルバム。イアン・マクドナルドやメル・コリンズらもゲスト参加した一種同窓会的作品だが、トリオになった為か？全アルバム中、最もヘヴィーでメタリック、えーいこれでどうだ！的な仕上がり。タイトルナンバーは「２１バカ」に匹敵する名曲。ラストの「スターレス」はクリムゾンサウンドの集大成とも言えるべき大名曲！買って損なし！一家に１枚あるべきアルバムですな。（自分はＬＰ時代３回買い直しました）
「宮殿」「ディシプリン」と並ぶ大・大・大名盤！！
