この作品はまさしくスコセッシ、デ・ニーロの出世作でありながら、またタッグの最高傑作でもある。腐敗し、汚れきったある町に彼は苛立ち、フラストレーションを感じていた。ある美人女性との恋と別れ、社会の普遍的なむなしさといやらしさにやがて彼もが屈折を極めていくのである。あまりに鮮烈で、反則的なラストシーンに感銘よりも深く、悲壮感が胸で嫌に響いてくる。その演出は突出した独自性を醸し、その不条理的かつまた論理的な映像描写をもはやできる作品は、右・左に存在しえないだろう。また何よりも今作で際だっているのはもちろんデ・ニーロである。その独特すぎるであろう間と、彼に内在した強さがやけに華やかに映し出されているのだ。かれには本当にいつもスクリーンでの普遍的な超えた存在感があるが、なぜなのだろう。これほど銀幕にリアルを感じるアクターは見たことはない。また娼婦役であるジョディーも幼いが、うまい演技も鮮やかな微光として瞬いていた。今、スコセッシは「アビエーター」で注目を集めているが、このような小作品こそ本当は彼の持ち場であるのだ。社会によって主人公は屈折しやがて英雄となる。人間の弱さ、英雄的な勇気を淡々と乾いたタッチで描写した屈折的映画の金字塔である。ps あえて言うとすれば、物語の連携性があまり感じられないとことだと言えよう。しかし北野映画同様、それがスコッセシの特徴であるが故に言ってもしかたない。
