Deep In The Hole is MOR's fifth album and arguably the best since the first. For well over a decade, when he's not been on production duty with the likes of
Kyuss,
Scott Weiland and
Queens of the Stone Age, Chris Goss has been delivering a steady stream of high-class heavy rock under the moniker Masters Of Reality.
To record this album, the elusive Goss rented a house out in the American desert near Joshua Tree, converted it into a studio and, as his friends QOTSA were recording nearby, began what he has described as an extended musical party. "Third Man on the Moon", "A Wish for a Fish" and the closing "Shotgun Son" are prime examples of Goss's melodic yet riff-dominated work. "Counting Horses" recalls classic Bowie, while "Roof of the Shed" is sparse and eerie, not unlike Weiland's Goss-p! roduced solo debut. QOTSA's Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri both appear as guests and lend the music their familiar sound, but the stand-out appearance is by Screaming Trees' Mark Lanegan on the album's centrepiece, "High Noon Amsterdam". As ever with Goss, Deep in the Hole is thrillingly heavy, but also intelligently constructed and hugely listenable. Fans of QOTSA will surely love it. --Dominic Wills
