   舞台はある全寮制の学院。初夏、悠（宮島依里）が湖に飛び込んで自殺し、そして夏休み。和彦（大寶智子）、直人（中野みゆき）、則夫（水原里絵＝現・深津絵理）の3人だけが家に帰らず寮に残った。悠は和彦に想いを寄せていたのだが、それを拒絶されたために自殺したのだと自分を責める和彦を、リーダー格の直人が優しく包み込む。そして下級生の則夫もまた、和彦を慕っていた。そんなある日、悠そっくりの薫（宮島依里）という転入生が彼らの前に現れた……。
   萩尾望都の名作コミック『トーマの心臓』を原作に、金子修介監督が透明感あふれる映像美と演出タッチで描いた青春映画のカルト的秀作。出演者は4人だけで、しかも少女が少年を演じるという大胆なキャスティングが見事に功を奏し、より一層ファンタジックな世界観が確立されている。（的田也寸志）

１９８８年リリースの不思議な映画。
当時の近未来が今は過去になってしまったが、
それでも、ピュアな映像は色褪せない。
登場人物はたった４人。
それも少女達が少年を演じる極めて実験的な作品。
そのため、愛憎劇でありながら、どこか純粋な
中性的と言うよりも無性的な印象があります。
舞台演劇のようで、しかもロケが自然にあふれて美しい。

音楽も中村由利子のピアノ曲による思春期の揺れ動く心
を表現した素晴らしいものです。
サントラ盤がわりに是非「風の鏡」も買っておくといいでしょう。

キャラクターに感情移入できるわけでもない。
ストーリーが面白いわけでもない。
面白くもなく、楽しくもなく、怖くもない。
恐らくこの作品自体、何かを伝えようとはしていない。

しかし、このひたすら美しく幻想的な世界は、観る者を引きずり
込んで離さない。

この世界は、作品を観終わってからも数年、数十年と記憶の片隅に

残るほど切なく魅力的な力をもっている。映画というよりは、悪夢
そのものだと言った方が正確かもしれない。

一分の隙もないほどに組み立てられた映像と、中村由利子の美しい
ピアノの音色で創られたこの世界は、1999年が過去となった今でも
その魅力を全く失っていない。

DVD版は中村由利子オリジナルの演奏トラックが収録されており、

これがまた素晴らしいものになっている。
叙情的な世界が好きな方は是非。

私はこの『1999年の夏休み』のような幻想的で美しい作品が大好きです。
当時、予告編で流れるナレーションがとても印象的だったのを今でも覚えています。
誰もが経験する思春期の心の透明感を美しい映像と音楽、
幻想的なストーリーで魅せてくれる何年経っても色褪せない秀作です。
この作品を見ると、まるで昔そこに自分がいたかのような懐かしささえ感じます。
そして、この叙情詩豊かな世界観にいつしか自分を投影して作品に見入ってしまいます。
物語は４人の少女が演じる少年たちの心理描写が描かれていますが、
各々が自分の殻を破って成長する姿がラストシーンに集約されているように思います。
夜中などに落ち着いてゆっくり鑑賞したい作品です。
