　これは、デビュー作「ザ・ハーティング」に続く２ｎｄアルバムで、何と言っても最近ＣＭでも使用されている全米No.1ヒット「シャウト」「ルール・ザ・ワールド」が素晴らしい（ヴォーカルがチェンジするのも曲に合っている）。また、静かな「アイ・ビリーブ」においては、どこかに心の燃焼を感じさせるものがあります。
　不思議なことに、当初のアルバムにおいては（１~８の曲）については曲想も全く異なり、後半にはライヴ演奏も入ってくるのですが、全体的に大きな流れがあって大きな組曲のような印象があります。それほどにアルバムとして絶対的な統一感がありました。この頃のローランドの作る曲は素晴らしいものがあり、その後、ＴＦＦが解散してしまったのが随分惜しまれるのですが、やっぱりヴォーカルの二人が幼なじみという関係は、お互い意地を張ってしまうのかも知れません。
　残念なのは、ＣＤ化で追加されたトラック（９~１５）にどうしても違和感がつきまとうということです。シングル曲のＢ面であったり（知らない曲でした）、別バージョンだったりで、決して駄作の追加ではないと思うし、彼らの貴重な演奏であると思うのですが、当初アルバムがあまりに統一されていたため、安易な追加トラックにはつらい面があるように感じました。でもこれは仕方ないことですね。

Tears For Fears (以下TFF)が創り出す音楽には独特の余韻が在る。誰も居ない夜の廊下で何処までも自分を追いかける足音。胸の闇を貫くように響き渡るドアの音。音の狭間での静寂の中、感じざるを得ない「孤独」。そしてその「孤独」こそが何にも飾られない「自己」を認識させる。

　情報と言う名のノイズに囲まれ、ヒット曲ですら音符を重ねたに過ぎない現代において、静寂を感じさせてくれる数少ないアルバムです。セールス目的のヒット曲「ルール･ザ･ワールド」(TFF自らアルバムにしぶしぶ入れたと証言)ではなくそれ以外の曲を夜一人で聞いてください。シングルＢ面中心の「＋７」も同様に貴方を回顧させてくれます。

年代を超えても良い物は良い。いつ聞いても新鮮。
ある時ひょんと、無性に聴きたくなる、そういうアルバムです。
こういう存在って少ないですよね。
