　「もうこちら側へ戻れないかもしれないと思った。」
　これは、全世界で感動を呼んだ映画『ダンサー・イン・ザ・ダーク』を終えた後のインタビューにてビョークが言った言葉。ビョークは、そのくらい純粋に全身全霊を物事に傾ける真のアーティストであると言えます。そして、その映画の後にリリースされたフル・アルバムが、この『Vespertine』でした。

　ビョークの作品というのはインタビューなどを読んで自分なりに解釈すると、全て自分自身をフィルターとしながら世界中の全ての人のための作品を作っているアーティストだと思うのですが、このアルバムはビョーク自身が言っているとおり「自分の中の一番内気な部分、奥に隠れている暗い部分に光を当てたアルバム」ということで、ビョーク自身がとても内気な性格だということらしく、そんな人達が「冬の静かな夜にたったひとりだけで暖かいココアを飲みながら秘かな幸せを感じられるような冬のアルバム」だということだ。だからアルバム製作にあたっては、自分が秘かにラップトップで楽しんで作っていたとても個人的で内向的な音を作品のベースにして、それを作品とするにあたっては、とても小さな音という音を集めて、サンプリングしていくことから始まったらしい。

　ビョークは「現代音楽やジャーマンプログレなどの秘かに誰も知られないような」マニアックな音を作るアーティストは大変に尊敬するし敬意をはらっているらしい。確かに今回のアルバムでは、そのような影響を一番感じる音づくりとなっている。しかしビョークはあえてポップスでの挑戦をしており、その土場で誰もが認める傑作をつくることを夢見ている。「私は田舎の大家族の出だから自分のおばあちゃんがいいと言ってくれる作品じゃないと意味がないの」このあっけらかんとした答！この純粋な理由がビョークの音楽の魅力の理由かもしれないと思ったりもする。

テレグラムでビョークは、１つの区切りをつけたのか？
このアルバム、聞くたびに病的なまでにのめりこんでゆく。
平穏、怒り、悲しみ、喜び、鬱、誰もが持っているあらゆる感情が直接脳を刺激するような不思議な感覚に襲われる事間違いなし。

車などで聞くよりも、夜、一人で、静かに、ヘッドフォンで聞くことをおすすめしたい。そしてなにより真剣に聞いてほしいアルバム・・

これほど映像的でソウルフルで核心をついている音楽があったとは！bjorkには監督業にも挑戦してほしいです。この世に、popsのジャンルに、ほんとうに美しい音楽があったんです...。創作活動中の私自身、多くの意味でインスパイアされた祝福に満ちた崇高な作品です。
