内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

74年の『タイムレス』以降、ECMから数多くのアルバムを発表しているジョン・アバークロンビー。なぜか本作はCD化が遅れていて、これが世界初CD化だ。リッチー・バイラークと組んだ作品としては、79年のライヴ盤、80年の『M』も有名だが、それらに先立つリッチーとのカルテット第1作が本作だった。アバークロンビーとリッチー、両者を結ぶ接点はビル・エヴァンス。したがって、これはエヴァンス的美学を背景にした高度なグループ表現が聴きもの。緊張感みなぎる密度の濃い演奏だ。 (市川正二) --- 2001年08月号

プロデューサーであるアイヒャーとバイラークの確執によりこのメンバーで録音された３枚のアルバムは、ＣＤ化はおろかＬＰ時代にカタログから外されてしまう。と云う悲劇に見舞われてしまいました。
どういう事情かは分かりませんが、今回のＣＤ発売はまさに僥倖！
和声的に衝突しやすいギターとピアノのコンビネーションの成功例を聞くことができます。

典型的なＥＣＭサウンドでもあり、ジャズ的な熱さは感じられませんが、冷たく青く燃える４人の名手の演奏を聞くことができるＥＣＭの「裏名盤」です。

ECMレーベルはとにかくジャケットのデザインが良いのですが、このアルバムもジャケットが美しいです。そしてこのジャケットそのものの音楽であると思います。録音する環境が良くなくてはアバークロンビーのような繊細な音楽家は本来の力を出せないのでしょう、アイヒャーはそういう部分に気を使える優れたプロデューサーだと思います。リチャードバイラークのピアノが華やかさを添え、バイラークのファンの方も必聴だと思います。個人的にはネプチューンが好きです。アルコがきれいです。個人的な思い込みかもしれませんがこの曲のバイラークのコードワークはジェフベックのブロウバイブロウの中に収録されているダイヤモンドダストに影響を与えてると思うのですが、、、勝手な思い込みですね。

芸術家肌のギタリスト、ジョン・アバークロンビーの名盤。
プロデューサーにマンフレッド・アイヒャー、
バックにリッチー・バイラーク(P), ジョージ・ムラーツ(B), ピーター・ドナルド(Ds)を迎えての録音。
相互の緊張感と信頼感の結晶から紡ぎ出された音は、美しく奔放に聞く者の耳と魂をとらえる。

ルー・タバキン・ビッグバンドのドラマーであったピーター・ドナルドのサポートが光る。
