インド古典に啓発されたジョンアンダーソンが描く２０分×４曲の究極の超大作。イエス信者であれば、垂涎物のアルバム。でもイエスファンだけどイエス
信者でない私は何回聴いても好きになれませんでした。理由は簡単で、２０分

×４という構成を優先したのか、曲がいまいち平板なんですよね（特に２、３曲目）。イエス信者には文句なくお薦めのアルバムです。でも、大作にも「危機」「錯乱の扉」「悟りの境地」レベルの緊張感を求める方には決してお薦め
しません。だから星は３つにさせていただきました。

イエスというと最高傑作は「こわれもの」や「危機」かもしれない。でも、最もイエスらしいのは、この「海洋地形学の物語」。いかんせん、結成当時からドラムしてるブラフォードはここには参加していない。ううん、残念。彼はキング・クリムゾンの一時のメンバーでもあるので、そちらに行ってしまったのだわね。海洋地形学などというと難しそうだけど、音楽としては非常にナイーヴで、なんせこのアルバムは２枚組みで、もしお疲れのところをこのアルバム聴くと、いつのまにか眠ってしまうかもしれないわね。十分睡眠を取ってから、心を穏やかにして聴きましょう。彼らのアルバムの中では、最も神聖な領域に属するアルバムで、冒頭からのジョンの念仏というか呪文を唱えるような歌は、もうぞくぞくするわね２枚目初めの曲のハウならではの変態ギター、身がよじれるし、最後の曲のエンディングなんか、最高だわ（どういうコード進行？）。なんせ、２枚組みで４曲しかないし、１曲１曲をこうだというのも難しいし、むしろ全体でひとつの世界というべきでしょうな。人と神の領域を右往左往する世界だわね。それにしても、この超大作、難解であるとされ、非常に受けも悪かったようで、大作主義を「危機」で成功させ、さらに頂点をここに極めた感があったのに、この後、リック・ウエイクマンは不満だったのか脱退しちゃったし、彼ら自身も大作主義をやめちゃったね。でも、いいのよ、そんなに受けを狙わなくても。馬の耳に念仏でもいいのよ。だからお願い、もう１回、超大作を作ってよ。１曲が６０分くらいの。

全シンフォニック・ロック・ファンはこれを買うべきです。得体の知れぬバンド、アルバムにお金をつぎ込むよりも、この一部ではイエスの「失敗作」とも言われるこのアルバムを買うべきです。彼らの実力はをなめてはいけません。このアルバムはシンフォニック・ロックの平均点を「遙かに」に超えており、そんじょそこらのバンドでは決して作ることの出来ない傑作なのです。しかもリマスターにより、音質が以前のCDに比べ恐ろしいほど良くなっている！
