一人の人間から、こんなにも違った曲が生まれてくるものか、と思うほど彩に富んだアルバム。しかし、そのどれもにASKAの色が映し出されている。
１のラブソング性はいわずもがな、３の岩崎宏美さんとのデュエットも、非常に美しい。ピッチも完璧。良い歌い手同士が合わさると、こういった美しさが生まれる。また、他ミュージャンに提供した曲もカバーされている。例えば６は高橋真梨子さんに、７は中村雅俊さんに、１０は薬師丸ひろ子さんに提供したもの。曲を聴いてみるとわかるが、ASKAはその歌い手の持ち味を最大に引き出すイメージング力を持っている。実際、７などは某ドラマのエンディング曲で、中村さんが歌うのを聴いた時、「なんと中村さんのイメージに合っているんだ！」と感嘆したものだ。しかし、そんな他ミュージシャンのために書かれた曲をASKA本人が歌っても、何の違和感もなく、女歌もぴたりとはまっている。７の、都会に生きる男の哀愁を描いた詞は特筆モノ。８は人類愛をテーマにした曲であるが、神に祈りを捧げながらも、〈もしも僕たちが優しさなくせば　今度ばかりは神様　あなたのミステイク〉といった遊び心のある歌詞、そしてまるで本物の聖歌のような神々しさ。１０の、過去を振り切ろうとする気持ちとは裏腹に、「未練」を感じさせるメロディー。それぞれが、実に個性豊かな光を放っている。

このアルバムの帯には、「どうしてそんなに。」というコピーが載っている。これに続くであろう言葉、例えば「強がるの」とか「寂しいの」といった言葉（あくまで私の予想だが）が、このアルバムを象徴している。押しつけがましさは全くなく、ただ黙って横にいてくれるような優しさを感じるのだ。これこそが、ASKAという人そのものであるように、私には思える。
SCENE２＝ASKAの優しさ、だ。

これはジャパニーズポップスの一つの頂点であるように思う。ブラックコンテンポラリーを基調とした音楽に日本人の感覚である美しいメロディーが織り交ぜられ、それらが見事な融和を見せている。その中で広がる圧倒的な和の世界。詩を取っても、メロディーを取ってもホントに美しい。これは日本人が海外の音楽を扱う時の本当に正しい近付き方なのでは、と思ってしまう。海外の人にも自信を持ってこれが日本人の音楽だ、と胸を張って言える様な作品だと思う。
ぜひＲ＆Ｂが好きな人には手を出して欲しい、素晴らしい傑作。

これは間違いなくジャパニーズポップスの金字塔だと思う。昔聴いた時は良さが解らなかったのだが、海外のＲ＆Ｂを聴く内に、その良さに気付かされる事になった。基調となる音楽性はブラックコンテンポラリーなのだが、その中に日本人の感覚である黄金律のメロディーが高いレベルで織り込まれており、それが見事な融和を見せている。

これは日本人が海外の音楽をいかに扱うのか、その一つの答えであるように思う。この人はブラックコンテンポラリー的なモノをやらせれば右に出るものはいない。アスカの音楽性は白人的なものよりも黒人的なものの中での方が恐ろしく輝く。Ｒ＆Ｂの枠の中で捉えた彼の作曲能力は、世界でもトップクラスに入ると確信するに至ってしまう、そんな作品である。
