   深作欣二監督による傑作実録ヤクザ映画シリーズの第4作。今回は前作から引き続き、昭和38年春から翌39年にかけて勃発した広島抗争事件の実態がリアルに描かれていく。今や広島は、西日本の広域暴力団・明石組と神和会の代理戦争の舞台と化した。明石組系の広能（菅原文太）や打本（加藤武）と神和会系の山守（金子信雄）らとの対立がどんどんエスカレートしていく中、一般市民の被害も続発していったことから、ついに警察は暴力団撲滅運動に乗り出し「頂上作戦」を敷き、組長や幹部などを一斉検挙。しかしその後も、山守系の武田（小林旭）と広能系の岩井（梅宮辰夫）との激突が繰り広げられ…。
   シリーズ最大の盛り上がりを示しながら、血みどろの抗争の果て、ヤクザ世界に空しさを覚えていく広能たちの諦念なども巧みに描かれているのが興味深い。（的田也寸志）

　仁義なき戦いシリーズの実質的な最終章（笠原和夫の脚本はこの４作目まで）。
　前作「〜代理戦争」で敵味方に分かれた広能と武田の争いに焦点を当てているが、前作「〜代理戦争」の渡瀬恒彦と同様に本作でも黒沢年男ら下級の組員の心情も描かれており、上層部が杯外交と縄張り争いを激化させていく中で犠牲となっていく若者に対する笠原和夫の目線が素晴らしい。この後の実録路線や「日本の首領」などの大作路線ではこの視点が欠如しており、若者を描いていても類型的な描写に終わっているために、支持層が離れていったのではないかと思う。
　そして、最後の広能と武田の「さらば友よ」並みの秀逸なラストシーンは菅原文太、小林旭の好演もあって日本映画史上に残る名場面となった。

言わずと知れた人気シリーズ４作目。実質主役は小林旭演じる武田明といってもいいだろう。
山守組対明石組の構図が色濃くなり、広能の影が薄くなり、あの武田の名台詞が炸裂する。
「広島極道（やくざ）は芋かもしれんが、旅の風下に立ったことはいっぺんも無いんで・・」初めて聞いた時は意味を把握できなかった。ただ、小林旭演じる武田の圧倒的存在感、カッコよさにしびれたのを覚えている。最後に広能放つ「わしらの時代はしまいで」。静かに頷く武田。これは脚本の故・笠原氏が言うように実質的シリーズ最終作を意味している。完結編のラストはこれの焼き直しに過ぎない（完結編は完結編で面白いけど）。ラストに出てくるテロップは長い戦いの終わりを感じさせ、何度見ても感慨にふけってしまう。

このDVDのディスク表側には４枚のスチール写真がコラージュしてありますが、その中に何故か、千葉チャンが思いっ切り関節技かけてる写真がまざっています。しかし千葉真一はこの映画に出ていませんし、そないな場面もありませんでした。
