長い間ヒット曲が出ず、遂に3rdによりヒットした平井堅の4th Album、3rdではほとんどを提供曲に頼っていたのに比べ徐々に本人自身も再び製作に携わり始めているので、BEST盤を聴いて彼のR&B作品を聞きたい！と考えている方は3rdよりもこの4thをお勧めします。現在の彼の世界観をそのままにサウンドはR&Bという作品に仕上がっています。つまり、現在の彼しか知らない方でも聞きやすいアルバムとなっているのです。

収録曲はドラマ主題歌として大ヒットした、高速のステップとビートが刺激的なKISS OF LIFEはもちろん、限定発売だったeven if、ちょっと地味でちょっとマイナーなMiracles（個人的にはeven ifよりこっちのほうが好き）、LOVE OR LUSTとヒットシングルを4枚収録しているうえに、アルバム発売直前にはラジオでヘビーローテーションだったファンキーなShe is!、コーラスの多重録音がすばらしいL'Amant、恋人との駆け引きをひとりで演じきるTUG OF WAR、死の直前？メリーゴーランド・ハイウェイ、しかし特にすばらしいのはラストに収録されたタイトルトラックGaining Through Losingです。おそらく彼の多くの楽曲の中でも1，2を争うほどの完成度を誇るこの楽曲はLove Love Love同様おそらくゴスペルにインスパイアされたもので、言うことなし！完璧なできばえ！特にラストでは多くのバックヴォーカルとともに英語で高らかに歌い上げ、アルバムのフィナーレを華々しく飾ります。

ポップな平井堅もいいけどやっぱりこういう刺激的な平井堅をもっと聞きたいと思っている方は一度このアルバムを、ポップが聞きたいと思うなら、SentimentaLoversを、両方バランスよく聴きたいという方はLife is...をお勧めします。

特にお勧めは「L’Amant」。邦題にすると「愛人」ということでしょうが、
シチュエーションを想像すると既婚者への片思い？かな。切ないよ~。泣けちゃうよ~。
1ヶ月間毎日リピートフル活用して聞きました。彼の曲の中でトップ3に入る！と思ってます。
ただカラオケで歌うには一息が長い！さすが平井堅

もう1曲オススメなのが「even if」静かなバーで片思いの彼女と二人並んで飲んでるシーンでは、
複雑で切ない心情が歌われててしんみりします。
オブリガードで歌ってる彼の英語の歌詞やハモリが静かな伴奏の一部になってて余計な音がないのが良いです。

ただ平井堅って時々「ん？」って思うような曲作りますよね？今回のアルバムも「変身物」があったりして。

想像力をたくましくして聞かないと。

クールにヒップな曲を集めたアルバム。 TABOOやEven　Ifは、普段見れない男性の深い片思いを語る。Love　or Lustは、ビートにのって歌詞について考えるには最高の曲。シングルでもヒットした曲にTABOOみたいにm-floのリナとカップリングしているナイスビートも聞けて嬉しい作品。平井堅のファンになったばっかりの人にも喜んでもらえるはず。楽園が入っていないのがちょっと残念だけど。 最近ドラマでダイスキになったKISS OF LIFEが2曲目に入っているから。やっぱり友達にもどんどんすすめちゃう。
