　伝説の名盤として、昔からプログレ･ファンによって熱心に語り継がれてきた名作。後にスパイダース･フロム･マーズに加入したデイブ･ブラックが率いていたバンドでコレ一枚で解散してしまったそうだが、さすが、今日まで伝説といわれてきただけのことはある内容。

　とにかくメロディセンスが抜群に豊かで捨て曲など一つもない。一応プログレの枠に括られているが、ありがちな大作主義な曲作りではなく、一曲一曲はあくまでもポップ。内容としては10ccからひねくれた部分を取り除いて、よりコンパクトにしたような感じで、いかにも70年代を彷彿とさせる人懐っこい、黄昏たメロディが印象的。ちょっとハスキーなヴォーカルも全体の曲想と良く溶け合ってるし、要所要所で実にカッコいいソロを弾くデイヴ･ブラックのギター･プレイも最高。

　次から次へと珠玉の美メロが登場する1や3、とりわけ入魂の力作バラード4はこのアルバムの最高傑作だろう。CMソングとして使われたら問い合わせが殺到するだろうな･･･と思わせるぐらい印象的なサビが聞ける名曲。他にも軽快な疾走ナンバー6やもう一つのバラード7も文句なしの出来。普遍的なブリティッシュ･ポップを愛好する方に是非オススメしたいアルバム。

ポップであり、プログレッシブである――普通なら併用されることの無い形容動詞だ。
しかし、このアルバムではこの表現は成立する。
聴く者はその点で真にプログレッシブさを感じるのだ。
いわゆる大作主義的楽曲を期待する人には少し物足りなさがあるかもしれないが、
だからこそ「プログレらしさ」を求めすぎる人にも、「プログレはちょっと…」という人にも聴いてもらいたい。
「プログレ」らしく（というと乱暴ですけどね）メロトロンが利いているし、
最後の"August Carol"にはYesの「こわれもの」やKING CRIMSONの「宮殿」を髣髴とさせる壮大さがある。（といってもたった７分１４秒）
しかも随所に入る感情的なギター、ビートルズの流れを汲むようなポップな曲調、
余りの見事さにこれがプログレかどうかなど無意味な議論だと誰もが思ってしまうに違いない。
なにより最高であり、なにより残念なのがこのアルバム１枚しか無いということ。
ケストレルがこのまま活動すればFocus級に有名バンドになっていたのではないかと思う反面、
1975年以降がプログレ斜陽期であったことを考えると、逆にこの一枚でよかったのかもしれないとも思う。
一枚しかないからこそ、ケストレルは伝説なのだろう。
一枚だけで十分満足させてくれるから、このアルバムは最高なのだ。
聴き易く、明瞭で、なおかつ深遠で、実験的であり、心を惹きつけてくれる。
ケストレルは二律背反を打ち破った。
ポップであり、プログレッシブである。

７０年代風味満載のプログレッシブ・ポップの名作です。
筆者はジャケットにも魅かれました。紙ジャケのＣＤで、
アナログレコードみたいな帯までついていて、製作者による
この作品への愛情が感じられます。

曲はいたってシンプルなプログレ風味のポップ。
７０年代に創られたとは思えない良質のサウンドプロダクション。
とてもいい音です。まるでアナログレコードをいいステレオで
聞いているような感覚です。
１曲１曲は簡潔かつ明瞭な構成であり、聴いていてとてもキモチが
よくなりました。

７０年代の古きよきポップワールドを懐かしく感じられる逸品で
あり、お勧めします。
