桑田佳祐最初のソロアルバム。曲目は実に多彩で外しがない。
初めて聞いても、「新曲かな？」と思えるだけの新鮮さがあり、１０年以上も前に作られたにもかかわらず古臭さがない。
ロック調のやかましい曲あり、ブルージーな穏やかな曲あり、ポップ調の明るい曲もあり。絶対どれかはお気に召すはず。

１０年も前のアルバムだから、と聞かず嫌いしていると損をするアルバム。最近の曲で桑田ファンになった人ならぜひ買うべし。

松任谷由美さんのようにご自分でおっしゃらないが（笑）、桑田は間違いなく天才である。1978年、今は無き「ザ・ベストテン」に新宿ロフト中継で出てきたサザンが、”目立ちたがりやの芸人でぇぇぇぇす！”紹介してぶちかました「勝手にシンドバット」は圧倒的なインパクトで日本を駆け巡った。その後、桑田の快進撃は留まる事を知らなかった。彼の作り出す豊穣な立体感と骨太で圧倒的なボリュームに溢れ縦横無尽に飛翔するメロディは、日本のストイックでコンパクトな音楽シーンに一切類を見なかった。このアルバムは桑田の実力が、最も充実していた80年代に生み出された。恐らく、桑田ほど世界中の音楽をジャンルでの差別や見下す事無く研究し、自分の才能や生理と融合させ幅広い作品に昇華したミュージシャンは日本に居ない。日本の歌謡曲、JAZZ、ROCK、R&B、ラテン音楽、ビートルズ、ビーチボーイズ、etc,etc・・・。その完成度は、80年代中盤のサザンの名盤「人気者でいこう！」「kamakura」から一気に高まり、KUWATA BAND「スキップ・ビート」らで比類のない実力となり、88年の本作で、天与の才は、頂点を見た。ビートに従属しにくい日本語との桑田と戦いは本作では完全な融合を見せ、音と言葉は一体と化し、若き日の小林武史らの協力で彩るアレンジは一切の破綻なく、骨太で透明感にあふれつつ圧倒的にパワフルな『ポップミュージック』を結実した。何度このアルバムを聴いたか解らない。そして、桑田とはまったく異なったスタイルの音楽を目指す多くの知人から、このアルバムの絶賛を何度聞いたかも解らない。そしてこのアルバムによって何人音楽をあきらめた知人が居た事かも解らない・・・。比類なき才能が作り上げたポップの大名作。

僕は、このアルバムを１０年以上聴いているが
今だに飽きないアルバム。
自分の中での解釈の仕方が毎年変化し
何度聴いても新しい勉強になる。
また、この頃の桑田佳祐は、SHE’S A BIG TEASERやLADY LUCKといった
純度の高い名曲を残している。
