このCDはMCAレーベルが作成した、
本物のマスター・テープから構成されている。
音源としては最高品質である。
２２歳で飛行機事故により死亡したバディ・ホリーだが、
ビートルズを始め、特にマージー・ビート連中には、
多大なる影響を与えた。
クリケッツ時代のものから、彼にとっては人生終盤への、
主なヒット作が集められている。

洋楽におけるロック、ポップスの歴史の１ページ目にビル・ヘイリーやチャック・ベリー、リトル・リチャード、
そしてプレスリーが書かれるとしたら、２ページ目に間違いなく載るのがこの人だと思います。
多くのヒット曲自体も素晴らしいのですが、ビートルズをはじめとする後世のミュージシャンに与えた
影響では先に挙げた先人たちを凌駕するのではないでしょうか。

このアルバムでは、そのバディ・ホリーの主要曲をきちんと押さえた形で選曲されており、今でも輝き
を失わないエバーグリーンな作品たちが十分に楽しめます。
（個人的には他にも収録して欲しい曲はありましたが、まずはこのラインナップで十分でしょう）

バディ・ホリーはこのアルバムの収録曲以外にも良い曲が多いので、試聴とかで気に入れば２枚組
のコンプリートに近い物を買うという選択肢もあると思います。（私も LP 盤で何枚か持ってるから
このベスト盤を買いましたが、今から思うと２枚組買っとけばよかったかな〜、とか思ったり・・）

また、このアルバムに収録されているほとんどの曲は、後世のいろいろなミュージシャンによって
カバーされていますので、それらと比較してみるのももう一つのバディ・ホリーの楽しみ方だと
思います。（お勧めはリンダ・ロンシュタット。<1> That’ll Be The Day、<8> It’s So Easy、
<19> It Doesn’t Matter Any More などをカバーしています）

バディ・ホリーは古き良き時代 ’50 (フィフティーズ) に殉ずるかのように、あの「ラ・バンバ」で有名な
リッチー・バレンスやビッグ・ボッパーとのツアー中に、飛行機墜落で亡くなります。バディ享年 22 歳、
リッチー・バレンスに至ってはなんと 17 歳のことでした。そんなことを考えながら、ラストの「True Love Ways」
を聴いていると泣けてきます・・・。
