   70年代後半、警察官、インディアン、カウボーイ、水夫など、そのころ主流のゲイファッションに身を包み、ニューヨークのグリニッヂ・ヴィレッジから登場したのが、ヴィレッジ・ピープルである。実にそれらしいパワフルで陽気なナンバーは、世界中のディスコだけでなく、日本のお茶の間をも席巻した。
   当時、西城秀樹が『Y.M.C.A.』を、ピンクレディーや渋谷哲平が『イン・ザ・ネイヴィー』など、アイドルがこぞってカバーしたことでも知られる。本作品は、彼らの華やかなりしころの記録であるが、色あせた陳腐な感じはせず、若い世代も十分楽しめる1枚となっている。（春野丸緒）

以前どこかで「ヴィレッジ・ピープルの曲のテンポは人間の心臓の鼓動に合わせ計算し尽くされたものだ」と聞いたような気がするんだけど、嘘かホントか解らないけれど、何となくうなづけてしまう元気の出るビートが良いですね~。「これだけは押さえておけ！」なヴィレッジの代表的12曲＋12インチ・ヴァージョンを収録。R&Bというカテゴリーにも入れてもらえず、何かとゲテモノ扱いされがちな彼等ですが、彼等の音楽からは本物のパッション感じますね。見た目も楽しい彼等ですからDVDなども出てくれたら良いなぁ・・・

なんといっても『ＹＭＣＡ』は西城秀樹のカヴァーでお馴染みです。当時中学生だった僕は、秀樹ではなく”ヴィレッジピープル”の原盤の方を買いました。やはり本家本元は、ノリが良いディスコサウンドで全くの別物でした。メンバーの個性的な衣装も楽しめましたね。その１枚のレコードからヴィレッジにはまってしまいました。『イン・ザ・ネイヴィー』『ゴー・ウエスト』もおなじみの曲です。『ゴー・ウエスト』は後に”ペットショップボーイズ”がカバーして大ヒットを記録。いまなお輝ける名曲の数々が一度に楽しめるベスト・オブ・ＶＰはおすすめです。

通勤時、車中でドンヨリ気分の時に聴いています。
理由・理屈は必要無し！！！
とにかく聴いてると脳内にエンドルフィンが最高潮に
充満してきまする。
全曲、サビのところで歌いまくっちゃいます。
きっと、すれ違う車を運転されてる方は私を見たら
「変な奴、イタイ奴」と思うでしょう。
でも、良いのです。
楽しいんだもん。
