   ソニー・ロリンズが初めて手がけた映画音楽は、65年のパラマウント映画『アルフィー』だった。主題歌はバート・バカラック&ハル・デイヴィッド・コンビが担当したが、そのほかの曲はすべてロリンズが書いた。
   本作はそれら映画用に書いたロリンズのオリジナルを、オリヴァー・ネルソン編曲指揮の大型コンボとともに録音した作品である。といっても映画のサントラではなく、あくまでもジャズアルバムを意識して作られた作品で、ロリンズの数あるアルバムのなかでも常に上位にランクされる人気盤だ。
   人気の秘密はやはり曲が親しみやすく、ロリンズのプレイが解放感に満ちているからだろう。加えて本作は参加メンバーの顔ぶれも魅力で、ケニー・バレル、フィル・ウッズ、J.J.ジョンソン、ロジャー・ケラウェイなど有名どころがつきあっている。愛らしいメロディと豪快なアドリブの取り合わせは、聴いていて本当に気持がいい。ロリンズ入門者に必聴の1枚だ。（市川正二）

高校2年のときに初めて聞いたアルバム。映画音楽と聞いてなおさら興味を覚えました。ロリンズのテナーは豪快そのものだし、編曲をオリバー・ネルソンがやってるから、全体の統制も取れていて、イージーなアドリブ合戦に流れてないところがいいです。タイトル曲の「アルフィー」が最も有名ですが、「オン・インパルス」などいい曲もあり、60年代のよき時代が伝わってきます。ロリンズの音は背筋から、延髄に響く感じで、これが病みつきになるポイントでしょう。音色、リズム、アドリブと三拍子そろったアルフィーはお薦めです。
