私もそうだったように多くの方が最初コルトレーンミュージックに接した時、難解でとっつきにくいしろものとして敬遠するようです。でも何故か「目の上のたんこぶ」という感じで心と思考の中に住んでしまい、離れなくなるという経験を持つことになります。私の場合ジャズを聴き始めた十代の頃から生活の節目節目に現れては消えという続きです。例えば、若くて向こうっ気の強い時代、転職して新しい勤め先の社員寮に引っ越しした日にこれから先が見えず、孤独でぼんやりしている時にＦＭ放送で気を紛らわしている時、突然耳に飛び込み懐かしく元気づけられたり、又時が過ぎ仕事がうまく行かず心身症で入院したりの壮年時、病院内で同じコルトレーンファンと出会い話が合いお互いに励ましあったりという具合で自然と座右のミュージッシァンとなってしまいました。中でもこのアルバムは、激しさと沈着さ渋さが同居してトレーンの揺れ動き前進する時代の最高傑作だと思います。この中の唯一のバラード「ＤＥＡＲ ＲＯＲＤ」は何回聴いても心にしみいる名演奏です。でもコルトレーミュージックは、無理矢理人に奨めるものではなく、人それぞれの感じ方もあり静かに時々味わうべき苦いコーヒーのようなものだとも思います。

「至上の愛」と「アセンション」の間に位置するフリー突入前夜という時期の作品になるが、このアルバムの魅力はこの微妙な時期ゆえの所産といえると思う。フリー・フォームに可能性を求め始めたトレーンが史上最強のカルテットの中だからこそある「美」と「技」とそして「拘束」（これが肝心）によって生み出されたギリギリの産物といえると思う。アセンション以降では求めにくい「美しさ」がここには確かにある。それは又この後抜けていくマッコイ、エルビンに依るところが大きいということだろう。13での「至上の愛」を抜け出ようとするトレーンのフレーズは何回聴いても胸に刺さってくる程快感である。これを聴いてしまうともはや「至上の愛」は単なる“予告編”で、物足りないものになってしまう。それぐらい完成度は高いと思う。2はその間にあって（エルビンはいないが）“Ballads”を上回る饒舌なテナーをトレーンが聴かせてくれる。私にとってもうこれはすべてバランスのとれたトレーンの究極の一枚である。

1965年6月10日・16日、ルディ・ヴァン・ゲルダーによってニュージャージー、イーグルウッド・クリフのヴァン・ゲルダー・スタジオにて録音。コルトレーンの死は1967年7月17日なので正に末期と言える。

残された時間が少ないことを予想しているかのような類い希な集中力。このアルバムを聴くとそう思わずにはいられない。特に6月10日に録音された1-3の集中力。粗放にテナーが展開し、いつ尽きるか予想も出来ない展開の『Transition』。ハッとするような静けさを持つ『Welcome』。そして再度走り出す5部から成る組曲『Suite』の凄さはもうコルトレーンしか表現しえなかった『奇跡』としか言いようがない。

この後、コルトレーンは死の年まで苦しみににも似た音へと向かっていく。1965年以降の『クル・セ・ママ』、『アセンション』、『オム』、『メディテイションズ』、『コズミック・ミュージック』。そのいずれも苦しい。このアルバムはそういった苦しみへと旅立つ前の最後の輝きに思える。
