　もうさすがに解散してしまうのかなと思ってたところに奇跡の５作目完成！期待膨らみまくりだったのもあり最初の印象は「ん~？」て感じでした。今までのグランジ的なサウンド、怪しげなイメージはほとんどないんです。でもここには極上のポップ・ロックが詰まってました。彼らのルーツであるビートルズがいよいよ全面に出てきた感じです。肩の力の抜けた良質なポップ・ロック・アルバム。されどクソ爽やかなものにはなるはずもなく、所々垣間見える彼ら特有の毒っ気がまたイイ感じです。デビュー時からのファンなもんで、二曲目の突き抜けたポップ・ソングを歌うウェイランドには涙してしまいます。聴けば聴くほどな、長年愛していけるアルバムだと思います。

良い曲の数は前作の方が多い。ただ音の分厚さぶっとさそのままにスケールアップしている。1〜5曲目までのロック、ポップ、セクシーな曲がまさにそれです。

中心人物スコット・ウェイランドの才能で評価を得てきたこのサンディエゴ出身のグループは、その一方でウェイランドのドラッグ不法所持をはじめとする不祥事によって音楽活動そのものがしばしば中断されてきた。結成から十数年経つ彼らがこの作品で5作目だというのも、単に"寡作"というだけではないわけだ。
何はともあれ、彼らにとっての何度目かの"復活"を祝福しよう。ウェイランドは《長い道のりでこびりついた泥を洗い落とせ》(11)とうたっているが、それも含めて彼が再びバンドに接客的に取り組もうとしたのはたしかなようだ。その意義深い成果がこの聴き応えのあるアルバムだ。アートの入口で入ろうかやめようかとためらっているようなウェイランドの詞は、うたうべきテーマを持たない凡百のオルタナティブ・バンドのスクラップの山からパイロッツを救い出している。アメリカのバンドにはめずらしい幻想的なメロディも魅力だ。アルバムのあちこちには、レッド・ツェッペリンに対する変わることのない敬意や批評的解釈もうかがえる。
美しいラブ・バラッド「ワンダフル」でウェイランドは《前に進まなくてはならない》と前向きな姿勢を見せているし、幸せな家族生活をうたった「ア・ソング・フォー・スリーピング」などを聴くと、彼は"長生き"しようと決意したのかもしれないとも思う。パイロッツは、ウェイランドは、この先、キャリアを重ねてゆけばもっとすぐれた作品をつくることができるだろう。それくらいの能力と可能性を持ったバンドだと思う。
