　2001年、イアン・アストベリー/ビリー・ダフィー/マット・ソーラムの編成で復活したTHE CULT。独特の美意識を感じさせる一方で、パンク系にも分類される彼ら。普段は簡素なリフが身上だ。しかしボブ・ロックをプロデューサーに迎えたこのアルバムは、時代を意識したヘヴィで、分厚いサウンドになっている。

　現代ヘヴィ・ロックに対する、THE CULT のアンサーとも言えるこの作品は、一方で優れたメロディーが満載だ。「ウォーー」と「War」を掛け合わせた1曲目、シングルになった3曲目のヘヴィ・チューン「Rise」など。メロディーとヘヴィネスが巧みに噛み合った好ナンバーが続く。

　歌姫「ニコ」に捧げられた6曲目のバラードは、広がりと高揚感を持つ傑作で、本作のハイライト。続く7曲目の「アメリカン・ゴシック」では、ガン細胞を喰い散らし、生きようとするマシーンが登場。「哀」を背負って畳み掛けるメロディーが素晴らしい。

　オーストラリア盤・日本盤に追加されたボーナス曲「リバティン」に至るまで、ちょっと信じられないくらい曲のレベルが高い。イアンの艶のある高音がきちんと響いており、音の分離も良い。たまたま発売日に店で見かけ、何となく買ってきたのだが、想像を遥かに超えた充実作であった。
