ミスチルの曲なんてどれも一緒に聞こえてつまんないと思っていた私が、ミスチルを好きになるきっかけとなったアルバムです。

誰にでも起こりうる日常や、大切な人を想う気持ちが綴られたこのアルバムを聞くと、「だめなのかなぁ」と思ってくよくよしていたことにも、不思議と「大丈夫だから」という自信が芽生え、とても落ち着いた気持ちになれます。

聞けば聞くほど心にじーんと来るアルバムです。
「ミスチルなんて~」と言ってる人は、絶対このアルバムを聞いてみて下さい！

　このアルバムには、ミスチルの結成前から、ヒットするまでのこと、また、それぞれの曲に対するメモなどが書いてある。昔のミスチルを知らない方にはとってもおすすめだ。実は私も昔の曲はほとんど知らなかった。そればかりか、ミスチルがヒットするまで、どんな苦労をしたのかも。ミスチルが好きでありながら恥ずかしい･･･。でも、このアルバムを聞いて少しではあるが、結成前の事や、ミスチルのことを知れたような気がする。憧れのミスチルに、一歩近づけた気がする、そんなアルバムだ。
　初期の曲はあまりヒットしていなかったようだが、私は大好きだ。このベストには、いい曲がたくさん詰まっている。ところどころに初期の写真も載っている。(桜井さん今も昔もかっこいい･･･)

　このアルバムを聞いてから、もっとミスチルが知りたくなった。

「アーティスト」と言われる歌い手は山ほどいるが、私に言わせれば、現行の歌い手で「アーティスト」と言えるのは、おそらくMr.Childrenくらいだろう。
表現性と商業性の両方で成功を収めた数少ない、まさしくポップスター。
そんなミスチルの初期のヒット曲がほぼ収録されている本アルバム。
デビュー当初のミスチルの曲は、恋愛的、青春的で、等身大の若者の心情を歌ったものが多い。（最近の曲しか知らない人は、若干違和感を覚えるかもしれない。）
シングルの売り上げで見れば、ミスチルは「CROSS ROAD」でスターへの第1歩を踏み出し、次シングル「innocent world」によってスターの地位を確たるものにした。
「innocent world」の歌詞は、それまでの曲よりも、より自分の内面と向き合い、自分の心情をさらけ出したものになっていて、
この曲から、昨今に至るミスチル特有の詩的世界が始まったとも言う事ができると思う。以後、表現性と商業性を見事に両立させて、ミスチルは立て続けにヒットを飛ばしていく。

本アルバムで特筆すべき曲は、「君がいた夏」と「es - Theme of es」。
「君がいた夏」は、記念すべきデビューシングルで、爽やかでポップな曲。今にして聞くと、その歌詞とメロディのシンプルさが、他の曲と比べてかえって際立っていて、心地よくも感じてくる。
あと、桜井氏の声。当時と今とで声色、声質が全く変わっていない。（少なくともCDの上では）
これは、何気にすごい事だと思う。仮に「しるし」の次にこの曲を流しても違和感なく声に入り込めるだろう。
「es - Theme of es」は、当時桜井氏自身のお気に入りの曲だったようで（今でも?）、より普遍性の高いバラードに仕上がっている。
「innocent world」にあった自己の心情表現から更にもう一歩踏みでて、自己の追求、葛藤が深くにじみ出ている。
（ミスチルの表現の自由性、実験性は、商業性への絶対的な信頼から来ているともとれる。）
そもそもesとは一体何なのか、歌詞にも説明は無い。それでも精神的な深みを醸し出していて、妙に説得させられるから不思議だ。

ありきたりなキャッチだが、ミスチル入門者には最適。勿論「Mr.Children 1996-2000」とセットで。
今に生きる歌い手の中では、Mr.Childrenを超える伝説は他に無い。伝説の目撃者になるのは、今からでも決して遅くはない。
