「ゲッツ／ジルベルト」がもし「デスモンド／ジルベルト」だったら良かったのに、とこれを聴くと思う。アルト・サックスをこんなにもソフトで しかもクールに吹ける人は、彼をおいて他にいないだろう。まさしく「デスモンド流ボサノヴァ」。タイトルの 「Bossa Antigua」 のAntiguaは「古い」という意味でBossaNovaのNova「新しい」に引っ掛けた彼一流のジョークだろう（たぶん）。ラストもあの「イパネマの娘」に対して「東九番街の女」だなんて... なんだか洒落てるなぁ。

夏に聞く、デスモンドは夏に効きます。湿度が高い日本で涼しくなる方法はデスモンドを聞くことです。黒人のコルトレーン勿論イイです。しかし、少し暑い！この暑さがいいという人がいますが、それはそれでOK！
マイルスはコルトレーンなんかと比べるとクールで悪くないが、でもこの暑い夏を乗り切るのは白人のヤルジャズが効きます。

これは本当に涼しい、ボサノバでもジョビン、ジョアンは涼しいが
ジャズで本当に涼しい人は少ない！
それがデスモンドの音楽です。
これを聴く事で部屋の温度は3℃間違いなく下がります！

ポール・デスモンドほどジャズ評論家ﾉ軽んじられているサックス・プレーヤーもいない。いわく、軽い、イージー、独創性がない、商業主義的ジャズだ。などなど。文学だって純文学と大衆文学があっても、大衆文学は純文学より劣る。ということにはならない。同じように、わかりやすいジャズがつまらないということには、ならない。暖かい、ちょっとくぐもったデスモンドのトーンは実にいい。オリジナルのボサノバ調の曲が多いこのアルバム、聴けば、ブラジルの夕暮れの海岸にひとっ飛び。心の底から癒される。同時期の「テーク・テン」「イージーリビング」「デスモンド・ブルー」もおすすめ。（松本敏之）
