オリジナルアルバムとしての『スリラー』は、1982年のクリスマス・シーズンに出ています。『Making Michael Jackson's Thriller』は、それから1年後の83年クリスマス・シーズンに全米で発売。ほどなく日本でも字幕付きでVHSとLDが出ました。短編映画として、世界各地で劇場公開もされました。

古い作品ですが、DVDで安く再販されるといいのにな！と、強く思います。当時もものすごく売れたビデオでしたが、今だって、間違いなくエキサイティングな内容です。

このビデオに収録されているのは、スリラー本編と、いわゆる「メイキング映像」。今でこそ、ミュージック・ビデオの舞台裏を見せるという手法は当たり前のものとなっていますが、この時代、「たかが音楽ビデオ」でそれをやる、しかもパッケージ化して商品化したり、映画館で上映してお客さんがたくさん入るという状況が、どんなに画期的なことだったか。

全体で60分あるこのビデオ。年のわりにおそろしくあどけない表情のマイケルが息子のように監督ジョン・ランディスに甘える姿や、二人のインタビュー、文字通り身体を張って狼男に変身するマイケル（あのコンタクトレンズはハッキリ言って超、目が痛い！けどマイケルは頑張る！）、CGなどの特撮技術が無い時代のモンスターたちが今でも十分に通用する芸術へと昇華される過程が収められています。

普段着でリハーサルをこなすマイケルのなにげないファッションセンスや、ジョン・ランディスの頼もしい感じ、恋人役のオーラ・レイちゃんの可愛らしさ、現場の活気と楽しさ、とにかくツッコミどころ、驚き所満載。

当時これを観た人たちがどんなに衝撃的な驚きに包まれたか、今は想像するしかありませんが、四半世紀以上も経った現在見ると、リアルタイムではない世代にとっては、「違う意味」での驚きというのも、けっこうあると思います。

ジョン「ちょうど休暇で妻子とロンドンに来ていた。そこでマイケルから電話があって、思わず叫んだよ、『マイケル・ジャクソンって、ジャクソン5の？』
マイケルの電話は、ロンドンとLAの時差が8時間だから午前2時だ（笑）。彼は尋ねた、『僕のスリラーという歌を知っていますか』って。『あぁ、もちろん』と答えたが、（本当は全然知らなかった、というジェスチャーをする）・・・『ビート・イット』や『ビリー・ジーン』は知っていたんだけどね。」

『スリラー』がなぜこれほどまでにタイムレスでクラシック、永遠の命を得たのか、よく分かる素晴らしいメイキング映画です。
