僕は、2枚目の「バーニン」や3枚目の「ナッティドレッド」を先に聴き、それらの音質が悪く、ライブアルバムの方がより覇気が感じられると判断して、レゲエを聴き始めて20年以上もこのアルバムを聴かないでいた。とんでもない間違いだった。リマスターで音質が良くなったのか知らないが、これは、ど迫力のレゲエだ。今ロックのクラシックを聴きなおしているのだけれど、1973年というロックの表現が複雑化と甘ったるさの一途を辿った時代における、このアルバムの価値がわかる。ここには怖くなるほどの緊張感と、ボブマーリィの素晴らしく力強くシンプルなサウンド、表現の完成形があった。
実際のところはエリッククラプトン、ストーンズの音楽を通して広まったレゲエムーブメント。このアルバムが与えた影響というのは、発4,5年後からレゲエを聴き始めた僕にはわからない。
しかし、素晴らしいアーティストを見つけるのはいつだってミュージシャンが早い。ポリスやクラッシュのメンバーもこのアルバムも間違いなく聴いていただろう。
ボブのアルバムを持っていないロック好きの人には、ベストではなく、この1stを強力に勧めたい。この緊張感に満ちた音・メッセージ、カリスマ的な歌唱。シンプルで力強いリズム。耳当たりの良いウェストコーストサウンドがはやっていた時期に、60年代活躍したロックミュージシャンが注目したのは当然だったと思う。

ボブの海外進出作として非常に評価の高いアルバム。レゲエと言う音楽が世界に向けて発信されたというより、言葉の壁を突き抜けてボブのソウルが聴衆の心に宿った瞬間である。ジャンルやカテゴリーでは無く、聴く者の魂を鷲掴みにできる力を持った音こそがソウルであり、それを持たないアルバムは名盤になる資格を持たない。そういう意味において、このアルバムは疑いようも無く、ソウルの名盤である。何度聴いてもボブのメッセージは薄れる事が無いし、魂の込もった音が時代遅れになる事も絶対に無い。このアルバムを聴いて昨今のレゲエミュージックに接すると、ファッションやスタイルを模倣する事はたやすく、わかりやすいが、精神や魂を引き継ぐ事はいかに困難で理解されにくい事であるかという事を痛感させられる。レゲエとはボブマーリーの事だが、ボブマーリーはレゲエではない。

リマスター盤で、音質がいいです。
一番好きなのは、Baby we've got a date(Rock it baby)。
デートのうきうきしてる感じが、かわいい☆
愛には、損得なんてなくって、ただ無償の愛を分かち合うことの幸せさが
とっても伝わってきます。

オリジナルバージョンには入っていなかったHigh tide or low tide,All day All Nightも、当時のマーケット上いれていなかったのがとても信じられないくらい、素晴らしい名曲。
友情、愛、を捧げきろうとするボブマーリィの世界は、とてもやさしくて大きい。
