プリーストは数あるHMバンドの中で最も好きなバンドなので
どのアルバムも気に入っているのですが、
最高傑作を選ぶとしたら、
自分だったらこのアルバムを選ぶ。

勿論、ペインキラーも、
復讐の叫びも、
運命の翼も、
そしてその他のアルバムも
素晴らしいアルバムであることは事実ですが・・・。

基本的には、復讐の叫びの延長線上にあるアルバムだと思いますが
それをよりメロディアスにし、アメリカのバンドにはない湿り気のある
いかにもブリティッシュなサウンドを聴かせてくれます。

今までプリーストを聴いたこと無い人はベストなんかを聴くより、このアルバム、復讐の叫び、ペインキラーを聴いてもらいたいです。
彼らのベストはどれも納得のいくものではないですからね。

5.0 out of 5 stars HMが最も盛んだった頃の最も素晴らしい作品！, 2004/10/17
「重金属音楽」が最も支持されていた８０年代。その中で最も完成度の高いアルバムは？と問われたら私は迷うことなくこう答えるだろう。「JUDAS PRIESTの”Defender Of the Faith”と”Screaming for Vengeance”です」と。（ふたつ挙げた時点でもはや「最も」ではない？）

前作”Screaming for Vengeance”で、ブリティッシュ・テイストそのままにアメリカという巨大市場でも成功を収めたJUDAS。この作品は前作の「重金属」路線を踏襲しつつ、いや、さらに「重金属感」を増したハイ･クオリティな作品なのだ。

疾走する（重たい）バスドラとベースの上をグレン・ティプトンとKK・ダウニングのツイン･ギターが縦横無尽に駆け巡る。（＃４”The Sentinel”での激しく呼応し合うツイン・ギター・ソロ（？）はまさに圧巻！これだけでも聴く者は身震いが止まらないだろう。）そして、（もちろん）ロブ・ハルフォードの「重金属」ヴォーカル！時に圧倒的な重厚感で、時にすべてを切り裂くようなハイトーンで迫ってくる。ライブで彼の「生の叫び」を聴いたときは、そのあまりにもの「高金属」性に「これはアンプのハウリングではないか？」と一瞬耳を疑ってしまった。とにかく生身の人間の出せる声ではない。

「HM＝重金属音楽」と、正統的（？）に解釈すれば、他のすべての作品はこの二枚のアルバムの前で霞んでしまうしかない。（LA「メタル」などとは、よくもうまく言いまわした詭弁に過ぎない。）それ故に次作”TURBO”が「正統派HMフリーク」に与えた失望感も大きかったのだが・・・。

せにょ~~る、本日御紹介いたしますのは、全米進出をはたし無事アリーナメタルバンドに進化した彼等の９枚目でございます。このアルバムはやはり前作品の延長線上に成立しておりまして新機軸というものは存在いたしません。逆に恐ろしい部分は『FREE WHEEL BURNING』のプロモビデオがやたらハデハデに製作されており、楽曲の低調さを＝いまいちさ加減を＝ビジュアル効果でごまかそうとしていた部分でした。これはごまかしでしかありません。

このアルバムにはこれといった突出した楽曲が残念ながらございません。その点が批判の対象となります。総合いたしますと、やや平均的なコマーシャル仕様なアルバムに落ち着いたということでしょうか。ややありがちなコマーシャルメタルアルバムであり、新たな視点＝バンドを再生できるだけの推進力＝アイディア＝がネタ切れ状態であったことを同時に暴露してしまったアルバムでもございます。これが全盛期のすごさがあればビジュアル手段に頼らなくても一直線に感動させてくれるはずでございます。同時にこの当時ロブハルフォ??ドはパンテラなどの新たなモダンヘビネスサウンドに取り付かれはじめていたのです。

そう言う観点から考えてみますと、ドラムのデイブホランドの演奏技量では新たなサウンドのアップデイトに対応できないというバンドの限界までをも示唆している部分で非常に重要なのでございます。
こののちそれを証明するかのようにレーサーＸからスコットトラビスをヘッドハンティングいたすのでございます。
