YESアルバム史上“天使の声”の持ち主John Andersonが唯一不参加であることから、ファンの間では評価が特に低いアルバム。しかし、一つのロック・アルバムとして評価した場合には決してその質は低くない。
これまでになくメタリックな音色で引きまくるSteve Howeのギターが特に印象に残る。また、Chris Squireのゴリゴリとしたベースも非常に気持ちよい。Trevor Hornのボーカルはリリース当時はJohn Andersonそっくりと言われたそうだが、ハッキリ言って別物だと思う。しかし内容は悪くはない。
このアルバムの後、Steve Howe、Jeff DownesはJohn Wetton、Carl Palmerと合流しASIAへとつながっていく。その意味でも歴史的な意味が大きい一枚。

ジョンアンダーソン、リックウエークマンというイエスの顔ともいうべき２人
が抜け、バグルスのメンバーを加入させて作ったアルバムです。そういうわけで、誰もが失敗作に終わるのを期待していたのですが、イエスのドラマチック性を残しつつ、当時流行したエレクトロニックポップの要素を入れた新しいイエスサウンドともいうべきものを造っています。

前作、前々作で、ポップの要素を入れようとして結局中途半端に終わったのに比べるとずっと良い仕上がりなだけでなく、1などはイエスの名曲ともいえると思います。また、ＬＩＶＥでは絶対やらない曲ですので、このアルバムでしか聴けない名曲群が揃っているという意味でも貴重なアルバムです。

音楽的な衝突から、ジョンアンダーソン、リックウエイクマンという中心人物が脱退し、「ラジオスターの悲劇」で有名なバグルズのトレヴァーホーン、ジェフリーダウンズが加入して作られた１枚限りのアルバムです。

メンバーの顔ともいうべきアンダーソンが抜けてしまい、どうなることかと思われたイエスですが、70年代前半を思わせるドラマチックな楽曲に80年代当時のエレクトリックなフレーバーを効かせ、逆に「究極」「トーマト」の迷いがふっきれたような聴き応えのあるニューイエスサンドに仕上がっています。

中でも14はイエス史の中でも名曲に上げられる大作ではと思います。
ジョンアンダーソンの熱烈なファンにはお奨めできませんが、プログレファン
には十分楽しめるアルバムだと思います。
