イエスのスタジオ録音９作目。
独自の世界観で唯一無二の音世界を構築してきたイエスも、時代の流れには逆らうことは出来なかったと感じる問題作。
本作が作られた当時、世はまさにパンク・ムーブメントの波が押し寄せてきた頃で、複雑な構成と雄大な曲想を誇るイエスは、この影響をモロに受けたと言えるであろう。

かつての複雑な曲想は姿を消し、１曲当たりの時間も３分~６分程度と短いもので構成されているのがその表れである。
演奏時間２０分代の大作にその実力を遺憾なく発揮してきたイエスにとって、この変化は致命的であった。
アルバム作りに対するメンバーのモチベーションの低下も、この作品に深い影を落としている。

リハーサル中、「俺のベースは、いい音を出していない」と言って弾くのを突然やめてしまったクリスに対し、「決してそんなことはない」と励ますリック。
収録曲「自由の翼」のビデオ・クリップには、そんな光景が映し出されており、バンドそのものが持つテンションが下がりつつある状況であることに疑いの余地はない。

事実、トーマト・ツアーの終了後、バンドの顔とも言えるジョンとリックが揃って脱退している。
いささか悲観的なコメントを述べてきたが、個々の楽曲における完成度は決して低いものではない。
むしろ、この厳しい状況下で及第点以上の作品を作り上げた彼らの実力を素直に評価したい。

なお、「a輝く明日、b歓喜」「クジラに愛を」「自由の解放」「オンワード」の４曲は、イエス・ファン以外の方にも是非聴いていただきたい秀作である。

1978年発表。ジャケットは前作『Going For The One』同様ヒプノシスが担当している。『Relayer』までの大作主義とロジャー・ディーンのコンセプトから抜け出し、新しいYESの音を模索している時期の作品である。具体的には曲をよりコンパクトにし、様々な音楽的方向に自慢の超絶技巧とアンサンブルをどう生かすべきかを模索している。スマッシュ・ヒットをメッセージ性に託した2『Don't Kill The Whale』やUFOにまでテーマの触手を伸ばした5『Arriving UFO』などが、その『悩み』の所産である。旧来からのYESファンにはやっぱり、1・2のような見事なアンサンブルが最も響く。『Future Time』から『Rejoice』の見事な曲想と演奏こそファンがYESに求めているものだ。
このあと1979年にはジョン・アンダーソンとリック・ウェイクマン脱退という最高の『危機』をYESは迎える。
