In 1977, with England still in the throes of the punk explosion, and art-rock becoming a decidedly unfashionable commodity, the longstanding progressive-rock institution Yes was making some of the most inventive and energetic music of its career on Going for the One. The album--which marked the return of star keyboardist Rick Wakeman to the band--features the hit "Wondrous Stories", one of frontman Jon Anderson's most limpid acoustic ballads. Elsewhere, the propulsive title track and the hyperactive "Parallels" find the band flirting with dissonance, belying Yes's image as a hidebound dinosaur. スタジオ録音通算８作目。
「危機」から始まった大作指向もやや影をひそめたのか、全体的に１曲の演奏時間が短くなり収録曲数も５曲と増えている。
その影響のためか非常に聴きやすく仕上がっているが、旧来のファンを失望させることなく高い水準を保っていると思われる。

１曲目の「究極」は、イエス流ロックン・ロール・ナンバー。後半の徐々にテンションが上がっていく部分は、聴く者に心地よい高揚感を与えてくれる。
一転して「世紀の曲がり角」は、しっとりと落ち着いたナンバー。黄金期のイエスの曲ではあまり見られなかったラヴソングである。

そして、クリスの最高傑作「パラレルは宝」は、作曲、アレンジ、各パートのバランスなど、どれを取っても非の打ち所のない傑作。
ノリの良いナンバーで、この曲は当時のツアーのセットリストにもしっかり入っている。

そして、いかにもジョンの作品らしい「不思議なお話を」を経て、アルバムのラストを飾る「悟りの境地」は、ジョン自身「イエスの最高傑作」と豪語する渾身のナンバー。
１５分を越える大作だが、煌びやかに美しく展開していくこの曲は、時間の長さを感じさせることはない。

「危機」や「錯乱の扉」と同様に緻密に計算されて作られていることが感じられる作品だが、この曲をもってイエスの「構築美ロック」は終焉を迎えたと個人的には思っている。
なお、「悟りの境地」は９０年代のツアーのセットリストに顔を出しているが、おそらくジョンの希望だと推測される。

このアルバムはメンバー間の関係が非常に良い状態で録音され、それを聴く者にも伝わってくるが、この良い状態はそう長く続かなかったことはファンの皆さんならご存じであろう。

外なコマーシャリズムに惑わされずに制作した結果、本質が浮き彫りされ
た・・・といった所でしょうか。

前作の『リレイヤー』は、イエス特有の複雑なリズムパ
ターンに裏づけされたまぎれもないイエス本来のロック
ではあった。がしかし、今もなお不人気な作品の一つと
なっていることは事実だ。
その理由は明らかである。
リック・ウェイクマンの不在こそがその理由なのだ。
たしかにパトリック・モラーツのプレイは上手かったの

だが、音色があまりにも異なりすぎていた。
イエスのサウンドではなかったのである。
そしてパトリックが脱退し、リックが復帰して発表され
たのがこの『究極』である。
このアルバムには今もなおステージで演奏され続けている
「悟りの境地」や「世紀の曲がり角」、「究極」が収め
られている。
他にも当時英国でシングルヒットした「不思議なお話を」

なども収められており、聴き応え十分な力作である。
個人的にはぜひともリックのリリカルなピアノの音色と、
スティーブ・ハウの切ないくらいに美しいアコースティ
ックギターをぜひとも聴いて欲しい。
ちなみに私は２０年来の愛聴盤の一枚です。
