マドンナが人気の頂点を極めたのがこのアルバム。

エレクトリックでピコピコした軽いポップアルバムの前作Like A Virginから、ベースが効いたロック寄りなサウンドで統一された本作は個性溢れる粒ぞろいの名曲がずらり。本作からは９曲中５曲がシングルカットされ、３曲がNo.1に、残り２曲もTop5入り、という偉業も達成。1年以内に1000万枚のセールスを突破し、80年代最強のポップアイコンとしてのマドンナを象徴するアルバムとなった。

また、マドンナの作曲家／作詞家としての才能が本格的に開花したのがこのアルバムで、ほぼ全曲にライターとして参加している。
マイナーキーにストリングスが重厚感を与えている最強ポップチューンPapa Don't Preach、キャッチーなメロディとスピード感が見事なOpen Your Heart、控えめだが美しいメロディが光る名バラードのLive To Tell、パワフルでキャッチーなノリ全開のWhere's The Party、60年代の明るく軽い色合いのTrue Blue、哀愁のラテンメロディ溢れるサウンドで日本でも大ヒットしたLa Isla Bonitaなど、一回聴いたら忘れないポップかつロックな名曲ばかりが並ぶ。

この後のLike A Prayerからマドンナがアーティストとしてさらに成長し実験的な方向に進化すると共に、彼女の人気は逆に下降していくのだが、このアルバムは全世界がマドンナ一色になった時の彼女のパワーと輝きを感じる事のできる彼女の作品中最高のアルバムの一つだろう。

マドンナのサードアルバム。このアルバムにはマドンナを代表するような名曲が、まさにずらりと並んでいるまるでベスト盤のようなすごい作品です。もしマドンナのアルバムを一枚だけ選べと言われれば、私は迷いに迷ってこのトゥルーブルーを選ぶでしょう。もしベスト盤を買おうと考えている人がいるなら、ベスト盤よりもこちらをお薦めします。このアルバムには、マドンナの溢れ出るような才能と魅力のすべてが詰まっています。まさに傑作中の傑作といえるでしょう。

以前のCDは、音が抜けて耳にかからない薄いベース音だった。リマスターされたことにより、耳にしっかりかかる音になっている。また、帯びもアルバム自体もなぜか落ち着いた雰囲気をもっている。 曲はさすがに８０年代だけあって、楽しくさせてくれる。今から見ると非常にシンプルなテクノ・サウンドが逆に新鮮な感じをあたえる。ノスタルジーを感じる。　「トゥルー・ブルー」「ライス　ラ　ボニータ」リミックスもリマスターされてうれしい。　今聞いても十分楽しめます。確かに８０年代だが、それでも風化しない何かを持っている。　「ライス・ラ・ボニータ」はリマスターされて本当にうれしい。音もしっかり聞こえるし、大音量でも聴ける。
