Brianがパーマネントなバンドメンバーとして機能しなくなった頃に他のメンバーが奮起して頑張った佳作。中でもCarlが歌いプロデュースしたI Can Hear Musicはその大空を漂うようなvocalとサウンドプロダクションが至福の時を過ごさせてくれます。

しかし、メンバーの努力がそう直ぐに実を結ぶわけはなく、これ以前のアルバムより貢献度が低いとは言えBrianの曲には他を寄せ付けない輝きが感じられます。
特にTime To Get Aloneのメロディーラインと、主題に戻る直前のストリングスが気が狂ったように上昇していくところは聞き所です。永遠に聴いていたい名曲です。

また、シングル発売されたオリジナル未収録のBreakaway、数あるBeach Boysの楽曲の中でも個人的に最も好きな1曲です。いきなり名曲を予感させるイントロを受けて展開される哀愁のメロディーと全編にわたって展開される無駄のない完璧なコーラスワーク、控えめながら躍動感のあるドラムとギターのコードカッティングが音楽的に高いレベルで融合しています。
なによりもバンド存続の危機に直面して各メンバーが一生懸命頑張っている姿が、痛々しくもすがすがしく、ある種の決意のようなものがこのキャピトル最後のシングル曲には感じられます。

Brian以外のメンバーの才能の開花は、続く名盤Sunflowerまで待たなくてはなりませんが、このアルバムは彼らにとって意識改革のきっかけとなった重要なターニングポイントでもあり、必聴アイテムです。

『ペットサウンズ』までのヒットも挙げられず、ビーチボーイズにはレコード会社から、よほどの圧力があったに違いない。

だからこの作品では、みんながガンバてる。絶不調のブライアンも『恋のリバイバル（Do It Again）』をマイク・ラブと共作するし、当時から話題になっていた『アワ・プレイヤー』『キャビネッセンス』のSmile音源も収録。

特記したいのは、デニス・ウイルソンの楽曲。『ビー・ウィズ・ミー』『オール・アイ・ウォント・トゥ・ドゥ』『ネヴァー・ラーン・ノット・トゥ・ラヴ』と、ワイルドさと繊細さを併せ持つ三曲を提供し、もう一人の天才を発見できる。加えて評価の高いブルース・ジョンストンの楽曲も見逃せない。このバンド内の絶好調さは、次作『サンフラワー』に続きます。
