なんと言っても「グッド・バイブレーション」が素晴らしい。多分シングルヒットでは最高の作品だと思う。それに「英雄と悪漢」これも素晴らしい。どちらの曲も出だしの前の一瞬になんとも言えぬ恍惚感を感じる。その他の曲も面白いですよ。ベジタブルなんかはほんまに面白いと思って当時からお気に入りでした。当時は僕はこれが「スマイル」だと思ってた時があって、これだけでも随分革新的な凄い作品だと思って聞いていたのですがね・・・。

とかく巷でボロクソに言われてるけど、そんなに悪い？
カールでさえも満塁ホームランの代わりのバントなど言ってますが
今聴いてもじゅうぶんアバンギャルドだし、グッドバイブレーションズはあるし、ベジタブルズなんてこっちの方がいいと思うんだけど・・・
なにしろ私はここから深みにハマっちゃいましたので大きく肩入れします！

心を、先入観を、イメージを空っぽにして聴こう！
時刻は夜。ヘッドホンのヴォリュームは少し大きめで！トリップ！！

このアルバムに収録されている「グッドバイブレーション」「英雄と悪漢」は既に聴いて知っていた。この２曲が入っているのだからと他の曲にも期待した。　ん？　何だこれは。　野菜をかじる音、鳴り響く効果音、薄暗いボーカル・・・。あの夏のハーモニーやコーラスはどこへ行った？

これはビーチボーイズの音楽ではない。僕は一回聴いて、押入れにしまいこんだ。

しばらく時が過ぎた。心の片隅には、いつも「スマイリースマイル」があった。「いわゆるスマイル伝説」を後で知った。「ペットサウンズ」を聴いたあとで、むしょうに聴きたくなり、押入れから「スマイリースマイル」を取り出す。これは新しい音楽の形ではないか。そう思ってしまった。不思議だ。
やはりビーチボーイズは最高だ。
