   ライヴと演劇とを感性豊かにミクスチャーした、中島みゆきのステージ・パフォーマンス「夜会」。1989年のVOL.1上演以来、年末の恒例行事としてファンにはおなじみのイベントだが、このアルバムはその「夜会」から生まれた楽曲、歌われた楽曲をニューアレンジで収録したものだ。
   壮大かつ深遠な歌世界で、誰もが認める名曲である「夜会」テーマ曲<1>（ステージでの熱唱のイメージで聞くと、意外とあっさりとした歌い口のようにも聞こえる）で幕を開け、2年めの「夜会1990」から、6年めとなった「夜会'94 シャングリラ」までの楽曲を収録。「夜会」で演奏されたときとそっくり同じではないようだが、多分に「演劇的」であることを意識したアレンジが施されている。全10曲という収録曲数は最近のCDとしては少ない方だが、10分超の<9>をはじめ、1曲1曲が長いので充実感がある。（剛吉若寸也）

言葉の可能性を追求した舞台{夜会}から生まれた楽曲が新しいアレンジでレコーディングされた95年10月の作品。2曲がデヴィッド・キャンベル、それ以外は瀬尾一三のアレンジになる。

このＣＤの発売が発表になった時、どれだけ胸が躍ったことか。
ここに選ばれた曲はどれも優れた曲ばかり。
夜会ででも大好きだった曲ばかりです。
当時一番新しかった夜会の回「シャングリラ」はまだＬＤも出てなく、
そのうち２曲が入るのも分かっていたので、
発売が待ち遠しくて待ち遠しくてたまらなかったものです。
でも家に買って帰って聞いてげっそりしてしったのを今でも覚えています。

まずよかった曲。
「二隻の舟」は「EAST ASIA」に入っているものもよかったですが、
夜会の度に形が変わっていたから、新しいアレンジでもすぐ馴染むのでしょうか。
２台のピアノを使ったと思われる力強い響き、
また最後の最後までドラムやストリングスを押さえて歌い通す勢いといい、
みゆきさんの力の入りようといい、
本当に別の名曲だと思いました。
シャングリラからの２曲は、まだそれまで舞台でしか聴いたことがなかったから、
すんなり受け入れられ、とても気に入っています。
勿論いずれのできも素晴らしいものです。

「泣かないでアマテラス」と「I love him」は、ＬＤ盤があまりにもすばらしく、
本当にこれ以上ないというできだったので、心から残念でした。
最初のフレーズを幾度となく繰り返していくうちにフェードアウトして終わる手法も、
どうも手抜きに思えて残念です。
「DIAMOND CAGE」は３人の巫女が踊りながら歌う怨念のごとき力が
まったく抜けきっていて、残念な演奏です。

夜会のライブ・ビデオと比べても仕方ないのですが、
どうも瀬尾さんのアレンジが手抜きのように思えて....。
ＬＤの音源で作ったベストが出れば本当に嬉しいのですが．．．。

夜会を知らない人にはこの程度かと思わせ、夜会を味わった人には落胆を
味あわせるアレンジ大失敗ともいえる一枚です。
ラストに高らかに唄った各名曲がアルバム編成のせいかも知れぬが
中継ぎ程度の印象しか与えないのが残念です。
それでもアレンジ的に冒険が成功しているのが「ふたりは」ぐらいですね。
それでもオリジナル収録には劣ります。

いい曲入ってます。でもアレンジがダメな感じ。「DAIAMOND CAGE」,「I love him」なんか名曲なだけに惜しいです。他の曲もオリジナルの方がいいのでそっち聴くことをお勧めします。
